Why is there so much focus on breast cancer when it's heart disease that's the number one killer of women?

Good question! First, it has only been relatively recently that female deaths from heart disease have superceded those from breast cancer. Breast cancer historically has resulted in disfiguring surgery and intense chemotherapy. It often strikes younger women with families. Therefore, it has a more emotional impact on us. Thus it gets the attention.

The prevalence of heart disease in women, and the different ways that it presents as compared to heart disease in males, has been appreciated relatively recently. Alas, it takes time for these things to grab national attention.

Because breast cancer isn't trying to beciome number one. It simply is a very serious disease that also kills women. Should we not be giving it any attention because Heart disease kills more? Should we ignore everything but heart disease until it is cured and then move on to only one more disease (the next biggest killer) and concentrate only on that? Look at it this way, women do die of breast cancer while never having had a heart problem don't they? There are so many fatal diseases out there that some attention must be paid to all of them and breast cancer is easier to detect and take care of early as long as people stay aware. Heart failure is sometimes the first symptom of heart disease. All of the major killers warrant attention and information needs to be out there. It isn't a contest between cancer and heart disease and aids and lung disease, it's a medical alert where it is needed.

Or better yet, why is there so much focus on breast cancer, when prostate cancer kills more men than breast cancer does women?

I dont know the answer to your question. There is still a lot of focus on heart disease as well, just not specifically for women. I guess breast cancer seems more imortant to some people. Maybe people who suffer it go through more of an ordeal, and so it is, in some peoples opinion, more important to focus on it rather than on heart disease.
