I would diversify my gifts. I would donate some of it to cancer research. I would also give to charities like the Ronald McDonald House or St. Jude Children's hospital. I would also donate money to food banks and the ASPCA and Humane Society.

Obviously the environment. Although poor people are starving, there were always poor people that were starving and there probably always will be. Whether we fight against poverty now or later, it won't technically have a permanent disastrous consequence on the state of the whole planet in general and the existence of living things in the long run. However, environmental destruction and global warming are recent, and if we don't start limiting the number of children we have, urban sprawl will cause the extinction of almost every single animal and ecosystems will collapse. There's so much to do and a billion dollars won't come close to covering it all, but I would donate most of it to research centers and organizations trying to help animals and plants all over the world. The rainforest is especially important because it contains so many species, and once destroyed, it could never be recovered. I think your idea of a preserve is good too.

A whole billion, eh? I'd collaborate with an organization like the Trust for Public Land or The Nature Conservancy and buy up tracts of land near existing wildlands. I'd donate a hefty chunk towards medical research, and I'd set up a foundation that provides scholarships and recreational opportunities for disadvantaged children.

If I had a billion dollars , I would choose to donate 1/4 of it to the poor and homeless shelters so that people can live a more comfortable life and 2 more quarters I would donate to the enviorment and the arbor groups. We need to renew the trees that were once in the spot where buildings now are. It's disgusting.

Space exploration.
Oh, and fusion energy research. There are some unorthodox ideas that are not being funded that could be proved (as either workable or unworkable) for a few hundred million dollars. Far less than the billions already spent on the giant tokamak machines that probably will not ever be able to make clean power anyway.

keep 1m for my self so i can go to college make more money and donate more than 1m in the end, and donate part of it to africas world hunger, and another to all the little boys and girls who go through winters without coats, mittens, hats, scarfs, boots, etc. And the money i get from college in the long run would go towards convent houses to take care of kids from human trafficing, and ones who have to work as drug mules every night just to stay alive.
