Many Americans deride Canadian military tradition. How many know that 60 000 Canadians volunteered to fight in the Civil War (mostly for the North)? Or that 50 000 Canadians volunteered to fight in Vietnam?

In each case, that's just about 6 full divisions.

You got it right, History. Here's a rundown on Canadian military history- WW1- 600 000 Canadians served on the western front, in the Canadian Corps, a shock unit that took some of the toughest German defensive positions. 23 of the top 100 aces were Canadians.

WW2- world's 3rd largest navy, 4th largest airforce, 100 batallion sized combat units, organized into 6 infantry divisions, and 2 armored divisions. Canadians fought in some of the toughest (and most underpublicised) battles in Northwest Europe, like the Scheldt Estuary.

Canadians also covered the US 8th army's retreat from the Chosin reservoir, at Kapyong, Korea, 1951.

So you see, Canada has a rich military history, even though a lot of Americans (and Canadians) don't know much about it.

I've been reading about this stuff since I was a little kid, and know more about Canadian history than 90% of Canadians, and more about American history than 90% of Americans!

They also fought in WWII. As I recall, a lot of the pilots flying in defense of England were Canadians.

I know they saw action in Vietnam.

But, I really don't know much. Apologies. I'm a product of the American educational system... if it's not on a standardized test we're not expected to learn it.

A little. Canada fought against the US in the Anglo-American War of 1812. Interesting, most Americans are taught that it was an American victory while most Canadians are taught that it was a Canadian victory. I know that some Canadians fought in the Civil War and in Vietnam and that the Canadians fought in WW I and WW II from the very beginning. The Canadians played a featured role in the disastrous landings at Dieppe during WW II, although it was the high commands fault, not the Canadian troops, and it was really only meant to be a raid and to test German defenses. Canadians were at Dunkirk and D-Day. Canadian troops are also involved in several peacekeeping and UN missions, the most contentious one currently is the Canadian mission in Afghanistan.

Not very much. However, the Canadian military has been involved in many conflicts and some very well known battles such as Vimy Ridge, Dieppe, and Operation Overlord. Canadian units also performed well during the Korean War.

I know they were to afraid to stand up to England. But if they fought in Vietnam then that is cool.
