A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has specialized in the field of psychiatry and has completed approximately 4-5 years of residency before he begins practice. Since he is a physician he can prescribe medications to treat mental illness.

A psychologist completes a BS, MS, or PhD course of study in the field of psychology. The usually work as counselors or perhaps in research. Warning! You have to achieve at least a Master's degree to be able to set up a practice and to earn any decent money.

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who prescribes medications to help a mentally ill patient stabilize their brain chemicals.

A psychologist may or may not have a PhD in psychology or therapy and are licensed by the state. They sit down and talk to people, hoping to uncover some root problem that is keeping them from living a normal life. A psychologist can also be a "life coach." That's a person who helps people change the way they live so they can be more healthy.

In brief, a psychiatrist has a degree in medicine and a psychologist doesn't necessarily have one. So, a psychiatrist can prescribe medication, while not every psychologist can. (Also, psychiatrists are a lot more expensive!)

A psychiatrist is trained in medecine as well and they prescribe medicine to people with problems (ex. patient is depressed-->prescribe anti-depressants)

A psychologist is NOT allowed to prescribe medicines. They are the ones you see in those comics with the patient on the couch talking to them about their problems.
