I am having the money taken directly from my bank account, and it says the status is "this item is pending payment through paypal. Payment was sent on Oct 18th." What does this mean? Did the e-bayer receive the payment? Could the package have been sent already or does the status change when it is? Please help!

It means the seller has to accept the payment before the transaction is complete.

They would have got an email from paypal saying "You have received a payment from eBay user such & such for the amount of so & so. Log into your paypal account to accept this payment" or something like that. And they would have to log in and click "Accept Payment" next to your details and the details of the money you sent them before they can actually claim the money. I think this only happens with new paypal accounts?

He should check his email soon and see he's got some money waiting to be processed into his paypal account. And when he does "accept payment" on ebay it will not say the payment is pending anymore.

If it is pending for longer than the sellers handling time, or a week (five business days). Then send an email saying you sent them some money but payment is still pending. And ask them if they sent the item.

It's similar to you writing a check, it hasn't "cleared" yet. Once the payment clears your bank - much as if you sent a check - then your item will be shipped, and the status will change. Paypal and Ebay STRONGLY suggest that the items don't get shipped until the payment is cleared.
