Diesel engines are more fuel efficient, and diesel burns cleaner. However, it costs considerably more than even premium gasoline.
Diesel engines produce a lot more torque. They also last longer if they are taken care of. But they are much heavier than a gasoline engine, and are designed more for towing and hauling heavy loads. A diesel engine crammed into a Camaro would not produce the same jackrabbit start, or the top speed that a 350 V-8 would produce in an identical Camaro.
