The Jewish law was the only spiritual guidance that they had. Much of Jewish law dealt with sacrifice. A proper sacrifice had to be an animal without blemish, or perfect in every way. If someone gave a sickly animal for sacrifice, he had no reward or forgiveness for sin, since his sacrifice had no value.

The Ten commandments were very basic laws.

Then God gave His son Jesus as the Perfect Sacrifice for the sin of all men, not just the Jews, but all men. At that time God made a New Covenant with man. Believe on my Son, believe that He died in payment for your sin, and I will forgive your sin and we will live together through out eternity.

The ten commandments were good laws then and they are good laws now, but they alone, are not the way to salvation.

Just as long as you remember that we are saved without the law and Paul didn't tell anyone to keep the law.

The ten commandments only show us that we're sinners. They can't be kept by us, and they can't save anyone. The only way to be saved is by grace through faith, to believe that Jesus, who is God, died for our sins on the cross and rose again.
