Dogs are social creatures. He is living alone when he needs to be living with other dogs, animals or humans.
He probably feels like an outcast and has become anxious, bored and is considering fleeing the yard for something to do.
He is in the prime of life, needs to be living with you inside the house and going for long walks, hikes and ball throwing play. Dogs don't really play by themselves, they want company.
Backyards are highly overrated for dogs. Long walks with people are highly underrated for dogs.

I'm sorry for the judgement being passed in this answer chain. You have options other than getting rid of the dog. For when you are not home, you can get your dog a playmate so that he has someone to play with and he's not bored and/or you can install an electronic pet fence that keeps the dog away from the fence. Or when you're home play with him for 10 minutes in the morning before you leave. Retrievers love to play fetch - get yourself a ChuckIt dog ball thrower (so you don't get a sore arm - or have to handle a slimy tennis ball), then play again when you get home. Remember, a tired dog is usually a good dog. :-) For pet fence info, check out www.pugetsoundpetstop.com, to adopt another pet www.petfinder.com. Good Luck.

First of all, how do you leave your dog outside all the time? I think your husband is right, you should take him to the pound. Dogs are a part of your family, not to be left outside to fight off mother nature, alone. Your retriever chews because that is probably when you give him the most attention, whether it be negative or not.

For one---my dogs love their crates so that is what I do even though they do not chew. Always leave toys out but you should change them out often as they do get bored with the same toys. One day leave 3 or four toys, next day pick those up and leave different toys out. I also used balloons to teach them to stay away from garbage. When they accidentally pop the balloons while trying to get the trash, it startles them and they will leave it alone after a couple of times.

I have a Retriever also. By nature, Retrievers are social dogs. They like giving affection & like getting attention. They are very family oriented dogs, especially around kids. Why does your dog stay outside all the time? That really upsets me. He needs attention just like people. He is bored & lonely. Why did you get a dog if he is to live a lonely, sad existence out in the cold? For a guard dog? You & your dog will be happier if he lives inside. They are good company. Also you can play all kind of games with him. Inside dogs live longer too. Please bring him in.

Maybe he's just lonely or bored. Or maybe he just wants something. My dog always starts to chew on stuff when theres something she can't have, she chews on whatevers right in front of her. Maybe you should get him some more chew toys or chew bones. Or it could simply be that he's rebelling. Please don't let your husband put him in the pound.
If he's put in there and isn't adopted within a month, then they habe to kill hem to make room for other dogs.

Your dog may be 5 years old but he probably just has a puppy personality. All dogs chew so at least he isn't doing anything really abnormal.

Awww... he is bored!!!!!
You've said it yourself- he stays outside all the time!
Give him some attention- take him for some nice walks!
You can get some really good teeth excercisers (like Kongs) from any good pet shop- have you tried this sort of toy?
