I know that there is a book out, but I'd rather not go out and get it. If you all could, please tell me an easy way to build a radio transceiver- with materials and instructions.

plenty of instructions on the net!
For an AM set:
Reciever:
Antena with a very small capactior linked into a coil thats in parralele with a variable capacitor in series with a diode in parallel with ear plugs/amp/speaker.

Transmitter:
audio transformer into oscillator with a voltage supply into the output (antena).

.Go to Radio Shack. They have lots of books on how things work and how to build a multitude of projects including radios. They also have radio kits and crystal radio kits
