I'm a novice at printmaking. I'm interested in creating a 12"x12" print with linoleum. I have noticed that there is unmounted and mounted lino as well as a product called Soft-kut out there in this size. I was wondering if anyone can tell me the main differences between these and what kind of challenges and results I might have. Also, any general tips on getting my previously sketched drawing onto the cutting material would be welcome as well as advice on what paper to use. I will be pressing by hand (no machine).

Thank You!

No difference really if you are talking result. Specially when doing this by hand there will be more influence of the 'handy work' than there will be from the lino itself. The differences are about how 'easy' it is to work with, knife-wise.

In most art shops you can get a kind of carbon paper but usually not black but red or blue. It is a slightly fatty color and you can just put it on the linoleum and trace your design. It will stick very well and does not smudge much when you work on the lino.

Paper and ink are pretty much what you want. Any combination has it's charm and is worth researching by itself. Be sure to use a roller when you apply the in or it will become very messy particularly as you are doing the hand-print.
