Depends on the round and the rifle.
Don't expect it to cycle, though.
Some sub sonic ammo is more powerful, so it MAY work.
It also depends on the springs in the rifle, if they are light or weak from age, it may work.

It depends on the rifle. Some will operate okay with sub-sonic rounds but most will have some trouble operating reliably. The sub-sonic rounds don't have the power that a regular round does and it won't reliably operate the bolt on a semi-auto. It just depends on the weight of the bolt and the power of the bolt return spring. What usually happens is that the empty won't eject fully and will get caught as the bolt returns to battery. Depending on the particular rifle, this could happen every shot or only every few rounds.

Yes and no. Like others have said, it depends upon how much tension is left in your mainspring. I have an old Sears 22 rifle made in the late 50's that will cycle them, but the action has very little spring tension left. I suspect that the gun was left c ocked for a good amount of time.
My newer Marlin Model 60 and my Savage 64 do not generally cycle with sub sonics. They do once in a while on a rare occasion for one round.

For the most part most modern .22 semi-automatic rifles won't consistently eject Subsonic 22LR ammunition. Especially those Subsonic rounds that utilize "primer power "only and have no additional powder in them. Some rifles can be converted to use Subsonic by putting a lighter weight Recoil Spring in place of the factory Recoil Spring.....
FYI The term "Subsonic" also applies to any standard 22LR Match and Target ammunition as they do not break the sound barrier either......Hence they are also Subsonic....

I can't speak for all .22s but they will not cycle my Ruger 10/22. My 30+ year old Marlin Glenfield will cycle it most of the time but the springs are about worn on that rifle.

Some will, and some won't. There is no way to tell if they will cycle your rifle without giving them a try.

I think it will, the reason it is subsonic is it is also underpowered.
