Sounds like he may have kidney stones, a urinary tract infection, etc. My bet is on kidney stones- due to the squatting and the sitting issue. You need to take him to a vet immediately.

Emergencies always happen on the weekend and when the bank account is stretched to the limit!
It sounds like a urinary tract problem..infection, stones, etc. Straining to use the litter box is a telltale sign. Hiding is another sign of illness, it was a way of survival for wild animals. Unfortunately there is no at home or OTC treatment.
Check with your vet to see what payment arrangements can be made. Then check with your humane society or rescue agencies to see what emergency funds are available.
Also, look into Care Credit. It is a credit card for medical expenses only, including veterinary. You can apply online. My cats regular expenses are in the budget, but my Care Credit has saved me many times for the surprises! I have also attached a link to agencies that assist with emergency vet bills, it is listed under feline diabetes, but they help with various expenses, not just diabetic related.
Purrs and prayers for you and kitty.

Take your cat to the nearest emergency clinic. Your cat needs IMMEDIATE veterinary care.
Most vets will let you pay off your bills on a monthly installment program. If you aren't comfortable with that, call up your local ASPCA or Humane Society and explain your financial situation as well as how your cat is acting. Usually, you can have a vet examine and treat your pet for a far less expensive fee than a regular vet.
Whatever you do, TAKE YOUR CAT TO A VET IMMEDIATELY! This doesn't sound good.

Take him to the vet immediately - if you act now, you might be able to get into a regular vet on an emergency basis, instead of having to go to a 24 hour clinic which is usually more expensive. Any vet receptionist will understand if you tell them up front you don't have any money, and they will help you with payment options or plans. They are animal lovers too... they want to see your cat get better believe it or not. Some will even push for you to get a payment plan if the dr is reluctant (just be nice to them).

There aren't enough details. But it does sound like your kitty has a problem: Cats who aren't feeling good frequently try to hide.
Call the SPCA or the Humane society to see if you can get financial aid for your cat. If all else fails, lay your cards on the table when you talk to the vet and see if you can set up a payment plan.

Go to the vet!! Some vets will work with your budget! Or try borrowing from family or friends. Don't just sit there, DO something! Your cat might be in serious pain!

Take him to the vet- work out a payment plan.
I doubt a vet would allow a cat to suffer for financial reasons.
Perhaps you could offer volunteer work around the vet's office cleaning etc, to get the bill taken care of.

Nah you probably did the splendid factor. they're in simple terms pissed because of the fact it comes out of their wallet now. You have been in simple terms attempting to shop the destructive cat. And yeah in case you caught around they might have caught you with the invoice. all human beings is approximately freaking money those days. Our Animal administration here sucks important... too ugh I hate them. do no longer difficulty approximately it you probably did the splendid factor and that they could suck it up. i'm particular they make quite a number of money anyhow whats them saving one animal and optimistically adopting it out later... they could deal. i replaced into attempting to shop this little dogs as quickly as and comparable factor ppl very almost ran me over they didnt' provide a dang approximately me or the dogs lol. maximum ppl are in simple terms consistently in a hurry to get some the place and are not relatively being concerned touching directly to the region yet while it replaced into their animal they particular as heck might. We stumbled on a cat as quickly as that replaced into injured we reported as animal administration it took them 4 hours to get here and that i replaced into having to look after the destructive factor and stay at homestead till they have been given here. i did no longer have the coronary heart to bypass away the destructive factor. i replaced into so freaking mad inspite of the indisputable fact that.

Get him to a vets as soon as possible. Over here in the uk our vets understand that we dont always have the money so we can pay later. Explain your problem to them, they might be able to sort something out for you.
I hope that it's something minor for both of you
Hugs
