Crime, and violence is everywhere. Feeling safe is a state of mind, and I have a lot of confidence in myself

I live in a small town in the Midwest US. I feel safe walking around on my own in the day, and with other people at night. Our town has a lot of local police, and the state police headquarters is just outside the city limits. So we see them all the time and it makes us feel safe. But, I never walk anywhere by myself at night. You just never know what could happen. There's a town less than an hour away from ours, and just a couple of months ago they arrested a man for killing all these women over a period of years. A serial killer. Right next door. It's a sign of the times. And just recently a young woman was abducted from a Target parking lot in the next state over. She was raped, murdered, and dumped in the woods. It surprises me that so many people have answered this saying how safe they feel. Truly there is hardly any place on earth now where you can really be safe.....but still people want to think it could never happen to them. Overconfidence is dangerous.
I can't believe this guy that said crime and violence "seem greater than they are". They don't seem greater they ARE greater! It's increasing every year! Just look at the statistics if you want proof. Every major crime is on the rise. I'd like to know what rock he's been living under. What an ignorant assertion.

Crime and violence seem greater than they are because the news sensationalizes them.
I'm in the USA and I have lived in big "dangerous" cities (in "the ghetto" as well) and small towns both and while crime and violence happen it is generally specific to the people involved.
There are very few places where random violence is high.
I feel very safe walking the streets.

I feel somewhat safe, I live in a quiet corner of the street where I'm the last house so there's really no need for people to be lurking about there!! most of my neighbours are elderly and they are very nice to know, however on a Friday and Saturday night,
We seem to get the drunks shouting, screaming and fighting with each other on the way home, I don't see why they come round our way as it's a dead end but more often than not they do their "business" against our garden walls. I can completely understand what your saying and it's getting worse everywhere.
Thank you

It isn't on the streets in my village. I have never heard of anyone being mugged, or attacked here, there haven't been any burglaries in donkeys years. I can't remember the last time I saw a bobby. I've only recently been able to get outdoors for little walks and was quite apprehensive every time I saw a youngster walking towards me. No need to have worried. Even the ones wearing hoodies have been polite to the slightly loopy woman with a big cheesy grin who first ventured out with a zimmer frame 8 weeks ago! I have a lot of faith and trust in people and have always believed that if you smile at them and speak politely then they will treat you with respect. My friend is totally different and scuttles about, ducking her head down when she passes a teenager and living in fear of them attacking her. She is totally paranoid about locking her doors and is forever curtain twitching watching who is doing what. Give them the benefit of the doubt is what I always say. Sorry, I went of on one of my little rants here.

Are you kidding me? There is NO place that is safe anymore. Random crimes happen more and more in what was once believed to be a safe area. Thugs are realizing this and so they are targeting those 'safer' areas because it is an easy target. To walk down a street especially at night and alone would be like putting a bulls eye on you back with a sign saying "Mug me, I'm easy'!

I suppose the best time to go out at night is just after someone else has been done. The police will probably be poking around for a day or two.

i live in Southampton and feel fairly safe although that feeling does not stem from having any confidence in the police who are as usual quick to arrive after the event,i don't look for trouble and will avoid if possible but at the same time will not walk away from someone in trouble,i cant do that.

I'm is the west USA, and I feel pretty safe during the day. Our crime rate is low, but I still would not walk alone at night.

In my village it's extremely safe and even in Malaga I can walk through the streets at 3am and know nothing will happen to me. My parents who live in U.K. won't even go out in their car after dark and they live in a small village near Malvern but they're terrified. I think it's very sad that people can't go and visit their friends or go for dinner without being frightened to death. Perhaps there's another question here, what happened to respect and discipline?

Completely safe.
Not sure how safe I feel on YA these days though. Seems that the site is spammed out by a BNP member who is using multiple identities to stir up controversy. You wouldn't know anything about that would you?
