As a wounded Iraq Marine Vet. I found it interesting that out of all the answers so far only one was an actual combat vet like me.

I dont mean that to sound bad. Just interesting. As I read the answers I felt like the people had genuinely tried to understand what it was like for us and that is pretty cool.

I planned on not answering and just reading the answers, but changed my mind after reading.

I can only answer for myself. I was very upset becuase I was wounded very serverly after being shot 4 times and was found unfit to continue service. I was upset becuase I loved the Marine Corps so much and felt I was born to serve and felt like my way of life was taken from me. I felt like I would have been better off to have died there with honor rather than to die much later from the effects of my wounds. Everyday I think how I would like to go back.

As for the effects of war I dont like crowded places when I drive I find myself looking at stuff on the side of the road, checking out each vehicle i drive by. And embarassed of my limp

When I came home I had a hard time returning back to civilian life. And being in the National Guard, we went back home, not back to our base, where we could confide in each other had we been active duty.
Most noticeably was I was jumping or ducking at every load sound I heard. I live in the country and would hear the hunters firing and jump at that. Plastic bags on the side of the road even scared me. I was always looking, scanning overpasses, derelict buildings, large bushes, everything.
My emotions changed also. Get p/$$ed at everyone, especially $h/tty drivers. Think they are out to get me. I cry a lot more easily than before. Used to not care about much, but now I hear about a soldier dyeing I cry, I watch a sappy love movie with my wife, I cry. And I’m a lot quieter than I used to be, and I was really quiet to begin with. Sometimes I wish I was back over there helping my colleagues rather than back here sitting on the couch eating Doritos.
It’s been a little over three years since I’ve been back and been out of the military and I’m getting better. Sometimes I still jump at loud sounds or have “war dreams”, and I’ll occasionally swerve to the other side of the road to avoid that soda bottle sitting in the ditch, but without my wife I don’t think I could be anywhere near as well as I am today. I’m sure if I were still single, my problems would just manifest and I would be in a world of hurt, or back in Iraq.

War has deep effects on people, the reality that life can be over in a second, has deep spiritual and psychological effects on a person. Even after the person returns home safely, the effect of war will be with them for the rest of their lives. I experienced WWII in Germany as a child and it had a deep effect on me, there has never been a time in my life, where I would not remember. I felt so much saver in the US, since 9/11 that is no longer the case. I don't believe there is a place in the entire world, where War is not a moment away.

Everyone is unique. Some get distant, some get clingy. Some have a hard time finding their place at home, others find a new appreciation. Some get jump, anxious, and confused. Others feel as if they've never left. Some feel a sense of pride, others feel guilt and doubt. Alot depends on what you've seen and what you've done, and your personality. There really is no answer to this question.

as a 2 tour iraqi vet that suffers from p.t.s.d(post tramatic stress disorder)when returning home after being in iraq,i became very quiet, and angry at times,i would wake up sweating and screaming.and felt like i was going crazy.i was afraid of large crowds and had feelings of not fitting in to civillian lifeand wanted to stay in iraq because at least i knew what was expected of me there and here you dont always know how to act to different situations, like i did when things happened in iraq.but with the help of doctors at the v.a. my life isnt totally back to normal but i deal with things that ive seen and done and everyday life which isnt so easy for returning war veterans.

I know many people who have been in wars. My Father and 2 Uncles were in Vietnam, My cousin was in Kuwait the last time, and My Husband and My best friend were in this one. I hate to say it but it really messes with your head. It gets to everyone so different though everyone has a unique experience and has very different views. Know one came back the same.

It depends on the person, but most often post-traumatic stress syndrome will cause them to be quite, mopey, lost in thought, and depressed. It depends on what they saw, did, and felt when they were at war. If the sights of , for example, is imprinted in their memory and associated with , they may become sensitive to harsh light or loud noises.

ive had friends and family go to war. its not really much, but the person might be a little depressed or soft spoken. its really just the expirence of killing that really gets to you. some people may not go through a thing but others do. it really just depends on the individual.

Psychologically. I'm sure a soldier has seen more violence then we could ever comprehend and it's going to bother he/she psychologically. He/she might have anger issues, paranoia, might start drinking, taking drugs or might withdraw from society. War is a sad way of life.
