I agree with buying in bulk. Things like rice, dried beans, and meats. Look for sales, use coupons for only things you know you'll need, and most of the time buy the store brand. It's all the same stuff, just different labels. Buy a brick of cheese instead of pre-shredded, shred it yourself, put it in a ziplock and freeze it. And portion up your meats when you come home from the store and freeze them. That way you don't have to make say, a whole pound of some meat and have some of it go to waste later. If you're near a Sam's Club or Costco, buy your spices in bulk. Those teeny containers at a grocery store are way overpriced. Buy frozen peas, corn, broccoli, and baby carrots, they all go in the freezer, and you can just use as much as you need.
And I'd say the most versatile things in the fridge are garlic and cheese. They go in everything in this house. And a big jar of chicken bouillion powder. That goes in about everything too.

Buying in bulk is a good ideas with main staples...
But for a clever idea that I would not suggest - I lived on totino's party pizzas (95¢) for a good week or so. That was something I wouldn't do again.

I ate sliced cheese and tomatoe sandwiches for quite a while when I was new to the workforce (and Mom wasn't there to feed me anymore). They were pretty good. Also frozen ravioli was a treatn with spaghetti sauce.
Also try black bean burritos, can of corn, can of black beans abd a cup of salsa mixed up on a tortilla with melted cheese. A real meal for about 50 cents each. (I put cilantro in it too)
You can get canned chili pretty cheap and thats good in tortillas too with cheese.

Buy main staples like eggs, cereal, fruits, vegetables, butter, pasta, etc.
Don't waste your money on pre-made meals. Yes, they are fast, but they will take a large chunk out of your paycheck. Check out stores like Aldi's and Big Lots to get brand names for a cheaper price.

Pasta is my best cheap grocery, it can be cooked in minutes and eaten hot or cold, so usefull with leftovers
Buy frozen veg, not fresh unless your using it that day, often have to throw away veg as it gets forgotten about.

Best item for your money is buying rice in bulk- it is cheap, lasts forever, and you can mix it with veggies and/or meats.
