Nothing is really easy when you're tracing your roots.

The only SURE way to know if you are Native American is documentation. Family stories is mostly about hearsay and details tend to get lost in the fiction as well as the facts so you're best bet is to find any documents that link you to a Native American heritage.

Of course, living Native American is a lot different than simply being classified as Native American. It's a wonderfully rich heritage! I encourage you to get to know your past not only with the vital statistics but also with the participation into the community you might be from.

Start with yourself and move backwards to your parents, grandparents, great grandparents, etc. IF you are a decendant of an American Indian, one of the people on your family tree will be legally documented as such, either on US census records or on a tribal roll.

Oh, start with your parents and work your way back. Try:

Free sites: there are several to choose from. Start with:
http://www.searchforancestors.com/...

http://www.censusrecords.net/?o_xid=2739...

http://www.usgenweb.com/

http://www.census.gov/

http://www.rootsweb.com/

http://www.ukgenweb.com/

http://www.archives.gov/

http://www.familysearch.org/

http://www.accessgenealogy.com/...

http://www.cyndislist.com/

Assuming they emigrated from Europe, start with Ellis Island and the Battery Conservancy sites:
http://www.ellisisland.org
http://www.castlegarden.org

And, to know for certain, have a DNA test done. I used www.familytreedna.com, but there are others of note. A DNA test will confirm if you do or not; of course, it is not sufficient to become "enrolled".
