I'm puzzled as to why you couldn't visit while she was recovering. However, a nice casserole or a cake would make a useful gift. Other gifts to consider: hand lotion, flowers, a potted plant, a bestselling book, slippers, or a cozy robe.

Buy a life insurance policy on her and make 2% of the benefit to a family member of her choice. I have a whole bunch of these really cheap policies. Some people takje offense to it but its nice to get a few thousand every few years. Helps me deal with my loss of my loved one. LOL.

You could give her a cute little gift basket with some treats and fun things for her to use now that she's feeling better.

Yes, a great idea would be to help her by cooking and cleaning for her. I mean after surgery you don't want to do anything!

Seems to me your friend is a very private person, and is keeping your friendship at arms-length.
I would take her some flowers, if you want to take her a gift.

I think some positive encouragement would be good. It would also be good to help her with cleaning and organizing. If she feels up to it, helping her fix her hair and makeup would also be nice..

Flowers are always great along with a card that expresses how much you missed her while she was 'out.'
