I recently got a divorce and have a 5 yr old child. I am in the military and have no family care plan. I was told that I am going to be chaptered out. I have no idea what this process consists of. I have been told also that the military will pay-off certain bills, such as credit cards, etc. And the reason is , supposedly because it is under circumstances that couldn't be prevented. Anybody know anything about this, please answer in depth.
thank-you

the military will NOT pay off any outstanding debt you have, so you can forget about that. How fast you are discharged depends on your chain of Command and how fast they feel like doing the paperwork.

The military usually gives 30 days to try and get a family care plan together. After that they will begin the chapter paper work. If you can't get a family care plan in 30 days you should let them know so maybe they will go ahead and start the paperwork.
The military will not pay anything it is just like a regular discharge. You can call JAG if you need info on the regulation and specific chapter because I can't remember it.

As a Vietnam veteran who helps others with their VA problems, your question is one that has even myself baffeled. I think it is due to your divorce, in that there is legaly no one to take care of child if you were to be transfered into a combat zone i.e Iraq, Afghanastan.

But here is a link to help you research military discharges.

Hope you make out ok, and best of luck to you
