*sigh*

Man, if I had a nickle for every time a protestant asked me that question.

Read Mat 16:18 -19. Jesus plainly tells Peter that if he forgives sins on earth, they will be forgiven in heaven and if he doesn't forgive them, they won't be forgiven in heaven.

This is immediately after Jesus made St. Peter the 1st pope by saying "You are Peter, and upon this rock I build my church."

The priest is acting as a representative of the current pope, whose authority goes back in a direct line all the way to St. Peter and Jesus.

What Scriptural proof do Protestants have that says if something is not found in the Bible it is wrong? Doesn't Scripture tell us the Holy Spirit will guide us in all things and reveal all things to us? How can the Holy Spirit reveal something to people in the future and have it be in the Scriptures way in the past? It is impossible so the premise that if something is not in Scripture it is wrong is bogus. This particular piece though just happens to be in Scripture. Jesus blew on his Apostles and said "whose sins you shall forgive will be forgiven"---that's short and sweet.

Also didn't he also say when he healed a man that it was the same thing as forgiving his sins---"which is easier to say, your sins are forgiven or rise up and walk"? Many people have been healed in the Catholic Faith.

Just so I can be equal with the Fundies---!!!!!---lol

For more in-depth discussion of this subject, consult the Bible, which is the definitive authority on all things religious, as it was written by God Himself and directly given to us mere humans to treasure forever. Every word of it is literally true, without exception. He even translated the Bible for everybody in later years.

Note carefully that no human can ever know God's will. Except the Pope, because he has a mind-bogglingly cool hat. And a stick.

All humans are equal in eyes of God. So no human can forgive your sins. Only God can.

Jesus said, "I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." (Matthew 16:19)

And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them,"Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained." (Luke 20:22-23)

The Catholic Church believes that "Only God forgives sin."

When a penitent person asks God for forgiveness, his (or her) sins are immediately forgiven.

Catholics also believe that when someone sins they not only hurt their relationship with God, they also injure the entire church, the body of Christ.

Oral confessing of sins is recommended over and over in both the Old and New Testaments:
+ James 5:16
+ Acts 19:18
+ Matthew 3:5-6
+ Mark 1:5
+ 1 Timothy 6:12
+ 1 John 1:9
+ Numbers 5:6-7
+ Nehemiah 9:2
+ Sirach 4:26

The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation with a priest ordained in the name of Jesus Christ not only reconciles the sinner to God but with the entire church, including you and me.

Remember all sacraments are encounters with God. This sacrament is a healing encounter between God and the penitent.

God in His infinite wisdom and mercy, not only gave us His only Son to open the gates of Heaven for us, but He gave us Baptism as the sacrament of our assent, and through which we claim the merits of Christ. God not only gave us the sacrament of Baptism, but also gave us the sacrament of Reconciliation in which we can receive His forgiveness of our sins committed subsequently, provided that we seek His forgiveness with a sincere and penitent heart.

But the Catholic Church teaches that priests forgive mortal sins, how can that be? The Catholic Church teaches that mortal sins committed subsequent to having received Baptism, can be forgiven BY God THROUGH His priests in the sacrament of Reconciliation. We have been given His word on it as follows:

Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained." (Cf. Jn 20:21-23)

"…And all this is from God, who has reconciled us to himself through Christ and given us the ministry of reconciliation…" (Cf. 2 Cor. 5:18)

Just as Original Sin is forgiven by God in the sacrament of Baptism through His priests, mortal sin is forgiven by God in the sacrament of Reconciliation through His priests.

What proof does anyone have of "scriptural proof?" When a book says it's the word of God, what's to make you believe. Lots of books say that. The moronies have a very funny book that claims to be a revelation. It's worth a chuckle.

None, but 1500yrs of brainwashing is a hard thing to reverse. It's all a matter of biblical interpretation.

They don't!!!!! Its like why they don't have a reason for worshiping the son of God and not God himself. They just run around doing what ever they like to do.
PLUS why not pray to "Jesus" to forgive the sins why the old man who most don't even know.
