I am currently converting to judiaism, and Jews don't celebrate Halloween. Right now there are alot of halloween things going on, and in school there is an assignment I am supposed to do, but it is about Halloween. Can I do the assignment without going against my religion? Also, am I allowed to watch movies that have Halloween in them? I am just confused on what I can and cant do.

Halloween is a fun day . It is not a religious holiday. Any church that condemns kids having fun , has to be wondered about .

You should discuss this with your Rabbi. As for Halloween, in most school systems, this is something that is really a hot topic as most religions have made it off limits because of religious beliefs. I cannot understand why a teacher would require you to do an assignment that would have to do with Halloween in the first place. I am Christian and find nothing wrong with it, in fact originated from a pagan belief much like Easter did. It was celebrated to scare away the demons.

Well, the school assignment. I would suggest that you explain to your teacher about why you can't participate, and ask her if there is anyway that she can give you another type of assignment to make up for that one. It might also depend on what the assignment is about, say for instance your teacher has you counting how many people knock at your door for halloween, then you can tell her that you can't participat. Now, if it's something simple like telling about a halloween you had in the past.....that's ok. Also, it's ok if you watch halloween movies, you're just watching them.

You're doing an assignment on it not celebrating it. There is a difference. You may want to include in the assignment the reasons why the Jewish don't celebrate it.

I would just talk to a religious leader. I would also ask yourself why you are converting to that religion and if you can handle all of the rules and things like that. Religion should be a personal thing and if you yourself feel that it is ok, then that should be good enough.

I don't think you are celebrating Halloween if you simply write a paper about it or watch a movie about it.

Maybe you shouldn't convert to a religion that you don't know very much about. It sounds like you don't even really know what the beliefs and teachings of Judaism are. Why are you converting then of you don't even know what you're getting yourself into and if you really believe it or not? Something to think about....

Yes, you may. You are not to celebrate it as in feel religious and emphatic emotions about it, but if it's only "for fun" there is no harm in it. As long as you don't brake laws of your religion, which you may find in Tora
