Maryland was actually named after Mary, the mother of God. The first colonists were a bunch of Catholics who landed on Mary's feast of the Annunciation, March 25, 1634. Father White celebrated their first mass in the new world and dedicated the land to Mary. The Lords Baltimore later put out that the colony was named in honor of Queen Henrietta Maria, and that is the official story, but I think it was pretty obviously a political fib. Why would you name a territory after someon's middle name?

They were named by men, in the traditions of men. God the Father's, only memorial was offered to Mary the woman who anointed Jesus at the hour of His death as declared by His Son in Matthew 26:14 and Mark 14:9.
