is it a good buy?
How do I make it so that I am aware if I am being ripped off by the car dealers or not?

The Avenger is a great car! It has been outselling the Chrysler Sebring(sister car) quite considerably. Go with the 2.7L V6 SXT package if you can afford it.

Lets see, how do you not get ripped off? Ask your friends and neighbors who drive current Chrysler products where they got theirs and if they liked their experience. Ask who their saleperson was if they liked him/her? Then, go see that person at that dealer. Also, Chrysler dealers are evaluated by the factory every year and are awarded "5 Star" status based on several factors, including sales satisfaction and service satisfaction scores.

Go to the highest volume dealer in your area. They are high volume for a reason. They sell for less, or have a great reputation, or both. Sometimes you can get a great price, but a crappy sales experience. Sometimes, you can get both.

Try to find a Chrysler employee discount. Dealers are required to show you the employee price on the car if you use the discount. You can save anywhere from 5-15% off the sticker price of the car using an employee sponsorship. Depending on where you live, they can be hard to come by. The dealer does not have them. You need to get it yourself. Employee discount price is the lowest price you can pay, before rebates. Do not ask the dealer to discount below the employee price.

If you cant get a discount, tell the dealer you are willing to pay $500 over dealer invoice, or 2% over invoice, or what ever. Dont negotiate from sticker price. Negotiate up from invoice. Tell them you want to see the invoice while you are negotiating.

Dont negotiate payment from the start. Work your price, then have them figure the payment from there.

Good luck, and have fun. Buying a car should be a fun experience. It can be if you let it.

Go to Kelly Blue Book or Edmunds web site. They both let you design your perfect car, then go through their inventory and give you a listing of the best match. They also give you MSRP and Invoice pricing for the car with all the options YOU want. They also will tell you all the incentives available for the car you are looking for. (Make sure your "best price" included any rebates or discounts available.) It then ask you if you want to find the nearest to your location.

In most cases, the order is sent to the Fleet Manager of the local car dealers, and they will call you (only if you tell the site to have someone call you, and you provide the information) By going through the Fleet Sales office, you generally will save yourself quite a bit on the sale.

the same sites will give you average trade in values for your area, so when you go in, you will have an idea what your car is worth.

I have bought my last three cars this way (1 with Kelly & 2 with Edmunds) and will never do it any other way. Sales people hate it when you ask for the Fleet Sales, because they know you just saved the amount that would have been their commission. 8-)
