I've always wondered the same thing...... I used to work at a call center where mexican phone agents dealt with american customers, and it was REALLY funny to hear their reaction when they heard that one of my co workers' name was Jesus.... it was too weird for them. As someone else said, I think it's just cultural, we don't think it's weird probably because people call Jesus "Jesucristo" and thus it's not weird that other "mortals" have the name Jesus. In English you rarely call this character "Jesus Christ" and still in this case the JESUS is there.... so it sounds funny that a person is called that.

In spanish, not only is JESUS a name, but it's also a sort of "complement" for other names both male and female: TERESA DE JESUS (female), JOSE DE JESUS (male)....

The same reason why children aren't named Judas in America , or Benedict . There is a certain sacredness that goes with the names . America is founded on Christian principles , so I would guess it really is all about the culture . Hispanics aren't to worried about it in their culture . It is a sign of respect while we hold it in high regard as to not use the name

Actually anglo-saxons do name their kids Jesus in the form of Joshua, which is closer to the Hebrew pronunciation. Of course most of them have no idea that thats what the name is. I am not sure why there is that unspoken taboo.

It's part of the culture. It is a sign of respect to name a child after someone that you love and admire.

It is pronounced 'hey sus'. In English it would be very awkward to call someone 'Jesus'.
