I understand that it would never have gained the power it did without using every shred of the Late Roman Empire's power to exterminate every competing religion it could.
Christianity was spread by the sword more than any other religion on the planet.
The Christians made the Muslims look like children playing in a sandbox.

Intuition is a poor way to judge things.
Anything we are taught from childhood will seem intuitive.
And after 1600 years of believe or die teaching from the Christian it is almost certain to seem intuitive.
So the Christian sense of what is intuitive is pretty warped.

Christianity offers a lot of perks to the faithful. not only do they get to be "chosen" to recognize The Absolute Truth, speak for God, moralize at and offer hell threats or salvation to all non Christians and be the majority religion that influences politics in America they also get to go to a celestial Christian exclusivity club in the sky, rule on high wearing jewel encrusted crowns while sitting on golden thrones being piously smug in the knowledge that they chose or were born into the right religion. how cool is that?!

the egotistical human need to be "special" and powerful is not counter intuitive ... it couldn't be more normal and mundane.

I'm not sure what you mean by counter-intuitive.

"Yes, your life sucks and then you're gonna die. But it will all be okay because Somebody Else will take care of everything."

Isn't this what all children -- who are forced to operate entirely on instinct and intuition -- want to hear?

Well, no. If people were to use their better judgement based on the knowledge they gained from living life, as opposed to that gained from being told specifically what to/not to believe, then people would have to look at it objectively, which means reading the Hebrew bible, learning what Jews believed, and comparing it to what is stated in Christianity. Put to that type of scrutiny, the religion falls apart.

Counter intuitive in what ways?

No. Remember, Christians like to call themselves sheep, and a flock. Remember, sheep and "flocks" are rather brainless and they follow the leader without thought of the consequences to themselves.

It says alot about them and their mindset. These are people that can't think for themselves because its easier to let someone else make the decisions.

If not it would be replaced by something else counter-intuitive, such as whatever you happen to believe

Christianity is a personal relationship with God-Jesus. Here and after. It is offered to everyone. : )

Christianity is about a new life..a clean conscience and living in the glorious love of God..

You have been told a lie..if you think it's about fear or hatred.

Probably not.

Just because people can't understand a concept like say, the trinity, they assume that they can't understand it because they are just not deep enough. It couldn't possibly be because the concept is nonsense.
