Because he's a sadist. He enjoys watching people suffer. Why else would he send people to Hell for all eternity? It surely isn't out of "love".

Wow. Interesting responses.
You point the finger at God in a pretty accusatory way. I can see why you might, based on the scenario you've partially painted. I wonder if it's possible to look at this another way. . .
Suppose there was One God who created all things. (This is a stretch for those who have not gotten to the point of accepting that this entire universe wasn't just a colossal accident or chance event. Consider whether this whole universe really could have just materialized without a superior Designer involved. I cannot recommend ignoring His existence.)
Suppose His desire for community was so strong He created beings with whom He would interact in a relational way. (This might be problematic for those who do not accept the early creation accounts in Scripture.) Let's even go so far as to suppose He placed those created beings in a *perfect* environment. (Back to the Genesis account again.) ;) By the Genesis account, there was a break in relationship, and in that moment a complication: sin entering the world.
If God really created us to be in perfect relationship with Him, and if we really rejected Him, then the only problem we really have is that which separates us from Him. Yes, He knows all that we have and will ever choose. However, He has also provided a way *out* for us and a way *back* into relationship with Him. That's a choice for us.
Allowing this world exactly the way it is just may be the most loving answer. We have, deep within us, a need to love and to be loved. He placed it there. We have a deeper desire to know and to be known. He put that there, too. Why bother to do that if it's all a set up for failure?
Perhaps the set up is really a loving gesture to allow us to do what we want until we find we really can't do it alone. Perhaps it might be the only way to let us see our need clearly enough to call out for help.
Loving parents don't always intervene in every circumstance. That over protective parenting style really wouldn't produce the best results. A loving parent will let the child discover, within limit, the power, strength, weakness, needs, and such that the child possesses. Sometimes a loving parent allows a child to make mistakes, too. It provides the child with an opportunity. . .and the parent a chance to minimize the long term damage.
You paint a picture of a very unloving God. I don't think I could love Him if He were described that way to me. Perhaps you should consider letting Him speak for Himeself and tell about who He really is by reading the Bible. That's the ultimate authority on His person and preferences and the relationship He expressly wishes to have with His people.

>God doesn't set us up for failure...
>we made our own decision and whatever decision is that ...there is a counter part on it.
>failure are just a failing grades like if you don't study very well then when you have a exam you may fail or pass...
>so everything will depend on how we measure ourself...our self worth.
>free will is for us to do things whether it is bound to good or bad...it our choice
>God knows what will happen but He knew it the the final answer will be on us...not base on he knew it or not.
>the love he has on us is free will to our action...to response in positive or negative...
>as for you if this trigger you then be happy...why you won't ask something that you think is right or left...opposite of right is left..what ever decision you had that time you presume it ...it was right at that time...
>and if you think you fail...then try again until you succeed...
>try other option ...research more...contemplate more
>for sure you will see your self pass or even over pass..
>be happy

You choose to fail he doesn't cause you to fail. Just because I know there will be a Presidential Election in 2008 does not mean I caused the election.

God does not know, what is going to happen. You determine your future, and you can change it at anytime to improve it. God let's you do whatever you choose, and does not choose for you. God is a good and moral God, and does not impose a predetermined future on anyone, but makes you the one who is responsible, not him, for what results from your actions. If you work hard, and utilize the neccessary resources available from all sources, your future will be a lot better than if you do not..

He doesn't set you up so you will fail.......it is not a death sentence, it is a way for him to show you how much you need him. Some do the right thing, turn to him and walk with him, others turn away. You are NOT punished (go to hell) for stumbling, you are rewarded if, when you stumble, you cling to HIM rather than continue to stubornly insist you do not need him. If you are never "broken" then you will never realize the deep need for him......if everything were perfect there would be no NEED to cling to him.
So........you asked, I answered. Hope it helps you understand

How can someone "set you up to fail" when we get to play the game until we win??
He even gave us the answer to all our questions in Jesus Christ the righteous.
You need not go to Hell..and I pray that you consider Christ before it is too late.

He only knows what will happen because He knows us better than we know ourselves, and therefore knows what choices we will make.
And I know He sets us up to succeed. We just don't take advantage of all the tools He gives us to do so. The Lord has made so much more of me once I turned my will and my life over to the care of Him than I was ever doing on my own.

God doesn't set us up for failure...we set ourselves up for failure and fail then we blame God ..we don't ever want to take responsibility for our own actions its always easier to blame someone else.. so why not blame God He cant defend Himself we think but He can and will .. so lets try blaming ourselves for our failures and not God..or even blame Satan no one ever wants to blame him but hes the King of lies so lets try taking some blame off God and if you cant blame yourself blame Satan...

God does not set us up for failure. We do that all by our lonesome. We all fail, one way or the other.
What God HAS set us up for is salvation.
PS: There IS no forever punishment. Romans 6:7 - "he that has died has BEEN ACQUITTED OF HIS SINS."

That's like asking your boss why he set you up just to fire you when you refused to do what he's paying you to do!
Come on now - nobody's forcing you to rebel against God - that's YOUR choice! You fail when you do wrong! GOD, however, cries out, "Please choose Life that you might live" (Jesus said "I am Life.")
If you're gonna blame anybody, blame yourself for your own disobedience and rebellion against Love. ("God is Love"). When you reject Love, all you have left is failure. So quit pushing God out of your life and live! (Jesus said "I came to bring life in abundance.")
