I have been dating this guy for a little bit. We had dated previously back in high school but we broken up after alittle bit and we went our different ways. Well, we ran back into eachother after about four years when I was going through my seperation and divorce. And he is amazing with my little boy, acts just like if he was the father. He told me that he had never stopped thinking about me and presented me with dog tags. When I tried to give them back he told me to "hold onto them" for him. I do not know if this means something in the military when a soldier gives their tags to someone. He will be leaving for Iraq in a few months.

As a former member of the Canadian Armed Forces, I would say that is about as close to giving your highschool sweetheart your letterman jacket or your school ring.
He wants you to hold on to his dog tags to let you know he will be back for you after his tour of duty is up, those are to remind you of him while he is gone. He will be reissued a new set.
If you have any feelings for him, keep in touch with him overseas and wait for him to get back.

Girl Dog Tags

To a soldier, especially one in war or who has been in war, his dog tags are his identity; they have no other identifying information on their person. That is how they are identified if they are killed, even if the dog tags are not necessarily with a body.

While watching the PBS series "The War," I saw one soldier in the Pacific who was captured by the Imperial Japanese and sent on the Bataan Death March. Thousands of GIs died along the way. At one point, they were forced to dig a mass grave and this particular guy threw his dog tags into the ditch he was digging so that his family would have some closure if he was killed since they wouldn't get him back if he died in a prisoner of war camp. They did get the tags back and he came home to explain a year later.

He gave you himself.

When you give a tag to a girl its kinda in a way like giving them a promise ring. We see it as basically saying we really like you. They aren't given out to just anybody. Think about all the hardships and things he had to go through to get those tags and realize that he in a way wants to honor you with them.

Most soldier have more than one set of Dog tags. I wear my husbands "other" set first when he would go to drill, but now since he has been deployed. I have not taken them off since the day he left. It lets the soldier know that he has something he "needs" to come back for. so to speak.... he may be too shy to "ask" you wear them....but it has meaning for HIM. If you didn't get the HINT....maybe you should think about how you feel about him....

Also when he returns from active duty or deployment the girl is suppose to return the dog tags with a kiss this is a sign of good luck, if she does not give a kiss the military member next kiss might be kiss of death......

The tags are the idenity of a soldier and represent the same as a class ring or a letterman's jacket. he is signaling his desire to develop a relationship and considers you special and is showing his commitment to you.

A soldier is suppose to keep their tags so their body can be identified on the battlefield when they die. Basically, he means that he that he won't be needing them on his next tour of duty and will be coming back to you before he dies.

Well there is no formal tradition about this because a service member is supposed to KEEP his dog tags on him at all times. (He will be in a tiny bit of trouble for this...he will just have to get new ones... not a bigge).

I would think of it as if a fraternity guy had given you his pin.... your not engaged, but he is obviously thinking about asking you to marry him at some time when the timing is a little better.
