My momma cat used to not eat all her food in one sit, until she became pregnant. The kittens are almost 4 months, and momma is a chunky kitty and has lost her kittenish figure. :D I know this is not healthy for her.

I have been feeding her small portions throughout the day, because I need to feed the kittens several times a day. Her portion doesn't equal more than one full bowl a day, well, maybe a little more, but not much more, and not less. I thought if I fed her that way, rather than giving her 2 meals (1/2 bowl each time) she would lose weight. She is not active, i have no idea how old she is. I found her, or rather she found me. lol. She plays so little, that a few times I saw her running with the kittens, it shocked me pleasantly. She doesn't work off her calories. Help! What I do? I can't leave food down for the kittens, she will eat it, and I have to watch her so she will not get their food when she finishes hers.

She is weening them from nursing, so she's not nursing them all the time now. I did not feed the kittens 3-4x day last week because I was away from home most of the day, and within a few days most had dropped weight considerably. I have been putting kittens food by me so I can watch momma. The kitten food is high fat, and she doesn't need it. Will she go back to eating normally again when she's totally done nursing? I am very concerned; I despise fat animal owners because it is so unhealthy for a pets little body to be so visibly overweight, and I don't want anything to happen to her, she is such a good cat!

If your cat is still nursing, she needs the extra calories. If the kittens are weaned, put them, or the momma in a different room to feed.

Possibly try feeding the kittens in another room and close the door so that the momma cat cannot get to their food when they are eating.
Make the momma cat earn her food. Play with her, get things that she will possible chase and possibly even cut her food back a bit more, so that she is getting 1/3 of a cup at each meal and set the timer so that if she has not eaten all within 30 minutes, then take up the food bowl and throw out the food (if it is mixed with wet food) or if it is just dry food, save it till later and feed her then.
Try to get rid of all of the kittens as soon as possible ( in other words find them homes), because their food is a temptation to her. Hopefully getting rid of the kittens and then having her spayed will make things much easier to handle.
Good luck with the situation.

do the kittens still nurse off of her?
If they do yes she is going to eat a lot. And kittens will nurse off the mother as long as she lets them. My cat was a year and still nursing off his mom.
If they are not nursing off of her still. you can feed her and the kittens in separate rooms. (The kittens are also old enough that you do not need to be feeding them any more than two times a day now. )And have you had her fixed? some times this causes weight gain also.
You could also change her cat food they do have diet cat foods that might help if that does not work you might have to take her to the vet because their could be a heath issue.

It's common to put a nursing cat on kitten food to help with the extra calories they need so they can keep producing milk for the kittens. The needs of a female with kittens is larger than what they'd be eating if they didn't have kittens. So I can understand why she wants more and more food, make sure she's getting enough to satisfy her.

when the kittens eat get her in another room.
1 bowl should be enough for a cat like that.
just keep an eye on her for the next few days and see if she is chubby or skinny.

remember, don't feed her too much because it won't be healthy.

my neighbors cat is really obese, when he walks he's kicking his fat with his hind legs... poor thing.
keep your can at a healthy weight.

Well when my cat had kittens my mama cat would not stop eating! I took her to the vet and he told me to keep feeding her. She knows when to stop.Later on she will stop and will loose the fat.
