It is a political terrorist group that uses religion as tool to keep ignorant people motivated.
Islam is not the only religion that has been used as an excuse for war and persecution. Christianity has been used in the same way; just look at the history of the Middle Ages.
I have read the Quran. Christ is referred to as "The Spirit", He was "born of a Virgin by the will of Allah" and He is expected to return at the time of the end of the world.
As long as human beings continue to focus on their differences, we will have war and terrorism. This will cease when we learn to focus on what we have in common.

Al Qaeda fits the criteria of a religion. They kill in the name of Islam just like Christians kill in the name of Christianity.

If you define a CULT as an unorthodox or extreme branch of a religion, then YES, Al Qaeda IS a cult.
Since God would NEVER wish to destroy innocent women and children or mankind in general, I think a just argument could be made that the Father of their faith is SATAN!
Their EVIL Father would be pleased by their actions. Satan is the "god" of DEATH.

I *believe* it is part of a "splinter" Islamic sect, so that would make it both, but it really depends on several subjective definitions.
Basically I'd stick with the term terrorist organization.
