That is a sign of and infected tooth or an abscess. Yes you need to see a dentist because it will only get worse, to the point where you are in agony.

Yes, you most likely have an exposed nerve under your gum. It doesn't even have to mean that your gums are badly receding, some gum nerves can just indiscriminately longer then usual. I'm 43 and I've had one for the past 2 years. I've been to the dentist, and no cavities were found. I also use Sensodine toothpaste, and it still hurts when I drink cold liquids, or brush that tooth wt my electric toothbrush. Does anyone know of a way to take care of this. According to my dentist, my teeth and gums are in good health, and I fully trust that he is a good dentist. My gums are a 2.5, where a 5 means gingivitis. He told me that that number is okay for my age. He didn't mention anything about a need for a root canal. I just wish I could enjoy a cold drink once in a while once again. Any advice?

HELLO,

THE MOST COMMON REASON FOR THIS IS A RECEDING GUM AROUND THE TOOTH. YOU CAN START BRUSHING WITH A TOOTHPASTE FOR SENSITIVE TEETH. THE MOST POPULAR IS SENSODYNE. START BRUSHING WITH THIS AND THE PAIN WILL GREATLY DECREASE IN ABOUT 10 DAYS.

SENSIVITY TO COLD MEAN EITHER ITS A CAVITATION OR EXPOSED DENTIN WHICH CAUSES SENSITIVITY.IF IT IS BCOZ OF CAVITY IT IS IN INITIAL STAGE & U CAN RESTORE IT . IF IT IS JUST SESTIVITY U CAN USE SENSODENT TOOTHPASTE IT WILL HELP U. BUT DONT LET IT GO ON ITS OWN.

It's either a sensitive tooth, or a cavity. You'd better go to the dentist. Or change toothpaste :P

How long has this been going on? This is what happened to me and yes it may be a cavity, but in my case I had to have a root canal. Not a normal one but a specialist had to see me. It was going on for so long but I thought that I just had sensitive teeth. Till one day I woke up in extreme pain. Hopefully its a cavity a root canal hurts

well, its always good to have a check up if you think something is wrong. i have the same problem and my dentist told me i have root sensitivity. he recommended Sensodyne ProNamel toothpaste. it strengthens the enamel around the sensitive spots. after only a few days i have noticed a huge difference. its worth a try.
