Is this thier chance to assert some authority over people after getting thier butts kicked in school?

Or does it take a certain mental disorder to want a position in which they feel more in control of daily situations?

Some cops are helpful civil servants but most (in my experience) just seem to have a chip on thier shoulder.

What's really going on?

Why are low life dirt bags blaming the Police for when they get caught? And whining about the "rude" treatment received? People who don't get it are the first to complain about the Police but also the first to call on them when needed.

A lot of officers are that way because a lot of PEOPLE are that way. When some of these manage to get into positions of authority, it allows them to express this behavior with relative immunity.

There have always been, and will always be, bullies. As long as they get away with the behavior, they will continue. Modern hiring practices in most departments attempt to weed out this type of personality. Departments and cities are more afraid, than ever, of being sued and do what they can to discourage police overreaction and brutality.

If your experience gives you the impression that "most" police officers are "*******," then, perhaps, it is YOUR behavior that triggers an unpleasant response on their part.

If you don't think this is so, then, why don't you sue?

You've actually provided both personality types in your question. Some want to help people, and some want to assert authority over people, just for kicks. Those are dangerous. It may never hurt anyone in their career - but it may - just once. And that one time can ruin untold lives. The departments need to do a better job of psychological profiling to determine if they have an officer who is power hungry as opposed to subservant in his attitude about helping people. He shouldn't think he is always right. He should be able to listen. Then he should treat everyone with dignity, no matter what he thinks of them. If he fails these tests, he shouldn't be on the streets.

Dealing with people like yourself is our problem. Grow up and stop judging us ALL based on your little experience. You are treated how you treat us.

Because only when we grow a pair and point a video camera at them, we knock them off the high horses. That simple!

Always carry your cell phone with you and be ready to turn on the camera the moment they get like that with you. By experience, I promise you'll witness an instant transformation

You get respect when you give respect. Act like an anal opening and you are treated like one.
