We are getting married in his hometown's Methodist church which is 4 hours away from where we live now. Me being Baptist, I dont fully understand the Methodist rules. Can anyone explain to me the rules of the church such as music, paying the church, and other subjects that maybe different from baptist? Thanks!

Congratulations on your up coming wedding! Like the responder above I, too, live in North Carolina however I'm also married to a Methodist minister. Different churches have different rules. Smaller churches often let you chose who you want to direct your wedding but they don't necessarily fix the sanctuary for you while larger churches usually have a wedding director who will help you understand what rules that particular church has. You'll have premarital counseling where you'll talk about your communications styles, your vision for your future, how you plan to handle finances etc..... Some pastors are more demanding than others when it comes to premarital counseling. If your intended is already a member of the church then there probably won't be a fee for the use of the sanctuary and again different churches have different rules about the use of their organ or piano and even the type of music you can have. If the church is large enough to have a church secretary the call her and ask her to send you a copy of their wedding policy and a copy of any fees that will be associated with your wedding. Also ask if they have a wedding director and if they do see if you can get her telephone number or her email address.
I hope this helps. I'm sure it'll be a beautiful wedding.

Its different church to church. Basically there is a flat fee for renting the church. You are required to pay for their organist--even if you decide not to use her/him.

It varies depending on where you live but for my church (NC) it was about $600. This was the rental of the sanctuary. About 150 of that was for the minister. About 120 of that was for the organist. Some of it was for the "wedding coordinator". She was in charge of the rehearsal--would sign off for the delivery of flowers, decorate the alter and loan me anything the church had in stock, if I wanted to use it. I used the candleabras and a couple of the pew bows.

You don't have to do communion during a wedding. It is ok if you chose to--but you don't have to.

You'll have a few premarital counseling classes with the minister. We had 3 with ours. At this time he will also talk to you about the order of the ceremony and any changed you'd like (are you doing a unity candle? are you having a special moment, like an exchanging of vows with a new stepchild or anything else you'd like to include).

They are both Protestant Christians so it isn't that much different from one to the other. The Methodist church is more laid back than the Baptists. There is no fire and brimstone and there is no submerging when you are baptised, but none of that is part of the marriage ceremony.

Ha, you seem to be hearing from the NC Methodists! (I actually am an atheist, but I grew up Methodist and still have strong ties to the church where I grew up)

There probably will be some pre-marital counseling required. You can have your own music, though. The Methodists are a much looser group than the Baptists in general, you shouldn't have any problems.

MOST (but not all) Churches will not perform a wedding ceremony unless you are a member. This is especially true in the Catholic Church where you and your fiance would be required to take classes before you could be married...most Catholic Parishes require six months or a year prior notification...Your "Community Church" and the Baptist church MIGHT be willing to wed you without being a member. My advice, don't get married in a Church unless it means something to you...grandmother might appreciate the honesty of the jesture.

you really need to get in touch with the church, so there won't be any surprises for the wedding. and do it now.
