Don't listen to the other users that say "You can't! You can't!", I am a veterinarian and it's good for a hamster to have a cricket every week. Of course, you feed it it's seed every day. Don't feed him crickets from outside, you must go to PetSmart or any other pet place to buy CLEAN crickets. Once a week is perfectly fine and he'll get the protein source that he longs for! :)

Jade pictures on the bag is not the only thing hamsters can eat their are other things that you can feed them from time to time as a treat I would listen to the vet. Once a week they also will eat meal worms which are another high protien source for them. Not to much but 1 or 2 a week isn't going to hurt them. Mine used to eat honey nut cheerios as a treat we made a game out of it. They can also eat fresh veggies or frozen warm water thawed mixed veggies. Fruits, nuts, etc... as a treat once in a while is good too. I had to give mine away because the dog I rescued tried to snap at him and he was handicapped so he went to a class of handicapped kids. I now own 2 baby hairless rats and 4 reptiles. The hamster I had was a long time ago.

I would say about once a week, maybe twice. You may want to get Meal Worms instead, you can keep those longer in the fridge if you want to feed live. This would give the little fuzzbutt an exciting diversion.
You can buy canned crickets and mealworms for lizards that you could give it as well. Or even a tidbit of plain chicken.

I had two hamsters once, and a bug got inside the cage somehow. I then saw one of the hamsters catching the bug and eating it. Personally, I was surprised, but then I thought to myself that animals usually know what they're eating, like what's good for them and what's not. So listen to what the vet said. She's right.
