The number of the card has to be verified including the expiration date, the name on the card and to see if the card is credit worthy. In other words have payments been made on time and the credit limit.

They are checking to make sure the credit card will accept the charge. This is normal and it usually is accomplished very quickly. If there is a delay, there might be something wrong with the card.

Do you have permission to use this card? Based on your questions, I suspect you are not on the up and up with this charge.

They check your credit card to make sure it isn't lost or stolen. They also make sure its unused credit limit is enough to cover the purchase.
