Lots of people have a religious addiction but some don't. It usually happens when someone has left some other addiction alone without the proper processing of the reason for the addiction in the first place. Some people can drink without being alcoholics, some people can smoke crack without becoming totally dependent, some people can gamble without losing all their money. Some can't.

It was in my family growing up, with all the hallmarks of the disease: anxiety reduced by its application, but heightened when the supply was not available; efforts to secure the supply take a great deal of time and distract from other, more fulfilling activities; thinking that others don't understand you when the addiction is really the barrier between you and others; obsessive thinking about the addiction; loss of interest in other activities beyond the addiction; etc.

Despite harmful consequences to the individuals health, mental state or social life?
Tis' only an opinion that religion is harmful. So no, with no scientific proof of it being harmful it is not an addiction.

It appears that it can be an addiction for some... especially the mentally ill. I think for most it is just familiar and feels "normal."
There is, however, a recovery program for the religious addiction:

I'd say for some religion is more a borderline psychosis, a mixture of monomania and psychotic episodes with hallucenegenic and self delusionary periods.

Religion can be an addiction, but relationship with Jesus is not. Religion can make you do and act in ways that if you don't obey, you feel guilty. Relationship with Jesus makes you feel free, especially from guilt.

That might be true if it were harmful to your health, mental state of social life....if you are doing something, within the confines of your religion that is detrimental to you, and you continue to participate, then, I suppose that might hold true.

You know the meaning of addiction but you refuse to know the true meaning of religion. Use your head. Why compare religion to addiction.
