GERD is often due to gluten intolerance and yeast overgrowth. Try avoid eating sugary, starch, and heavy foods. Try to eat more often in smaller amounts.
Avoid sodas (w/ or w/o sugar). Tomato products and spicy food can often cause more distress, as well.
Also pay attention to your diet. Keep a journal of what foods that tend to cause you more discomfort.
Above all, don't eat w/in 2-3 hours of going to bed.
My GERD was a result of yeast overgrowth, and Celiac Disease (gluten intolerance).
I am slowly trying to get rid of the yeast and with Celiac's, you must avoid all food containing wheat and malt.
Overall, if your symptoms do not improve, you could cause erosion of your esophagus and believe me, you don't want that.
Save the money to see a physician and an herbalist-holistic medical physician.
It has worked for me. I no longer need acid-reflux meds and can now occasionally eat those no-no things.
Take care and all the best. My prayers are with you too!

I used to have heartburn so bad I thought I had an ulcer. I saw 3 Dr's in a year, who each gave me a different prescription. After none of the meds worked, I went to a naturopath who told me to eat a pickle or tomato when the reflux was real bad. Whaddya know.....cured the reflux. Now whenever I have heartburn, (maybe 2 x a month now instead of every day) I eat something acidic. Even an orange will work. It's amazing, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg, and is natural besides!!!

Gastro esophageal reflux disorder means that stomach contents go backwards into the esophagus (the tube between your mouth and the stomach).
If you do not go to a doctor for medicine here are some steps you can take.
1.Do not drink caffeinated drinks such as coffee, tea, cola
2. Do not drink alcoholic drinks
3. Avoid greasy foods and if you are sensitive to milk products, avoid those.
4.Do not eat just before laying down in bed
5. When the disorder comes up, take Tums antacids.
