If your going to compare operating systems, you need to be fair, Vista been around for about 8 months, xp been around for 7 years plus (the longest wait for a new windows o/s ever), A lot of time to fix xp.
When xp was only 8 months old, it had more problems than vista does. Give it time, its a good system, and a little time will fix any issues. I have very few problems with it, Would you go back to windows 95? I remember lots of people complaining about xp in the early days..
I find it funny that people now say go back to xp, the same people whom said they will not switch over to xp.
If some feature you don't like in vista, then switch the feature off. you can find clear 'how too' instructions on the web.
My desktop is noticeably faster since I upgraded. why should I be unhappy that some 10 year old game does not work.
Some driver problems i kept having in xp have gone now.
Is your glass 1/2 full or 1/2 empty?
I see your still at uni, too young to have experienced any other operating systems launched over the last 20 years. Vista is the only Microsoft o/s launch since you became an adult !
I worked on the windows 95 launch in the UK.
Get a mac next time? I bet you wont pay the extra.

More to the point, when the internet is full of how f****ing awful Vista is why do people still buy it?
I know, because the shops only sell Vista now. because Microsoft only print Vista disks and licenses now.
I thought XP was a majorly retrograde step (I hate it's 'nanny knows best' attitude and Vista just sounds worse) so I gave up and switched to Ubuntu. There are things it can't do... it's poor at infra red, poor at winmodems but so far the only software I really need that it won't run or won't run something compatible with is Visio.

Everybody is whining about vista but never sees the good stuff that it will bring..Vista was made to prepare the user for a new computer line that windows is bringing out in a couple of years.
Ever watch the show CSI Miami? Well the new windows pc will be based on that and will be touch screen only with wireless options only (for it's own hardware and other hardware like digital camera's)
Yes vista seems like it is overly user friendly right now but go and disable some of the user options and it will work just like XP. If this really doesnt work for you just put XP on your laptop or pc or whatever

Yes i agree its totally abysmal, and i just do not know why microsh*t release these terrible O/S's when they know themselves they are garbage, ive re-installed XP and have vowed to stay away from Vista for at least a year to see if those idiots get it right,no wonder gatesey is so rich by turning out such incompetence and charging over £300 ( For Vista Ultimate ) which is really just a lukewarm version of XP.

Microsoft are not the world's premiere PC company, they're a bunch of amateurs who actually make one of the worst operating systems around today. It's just too big as a company, they need to take some of their thumbs out of pies and just concentrate on making two products - Windows and Office, that's all. Not mice, not games, not anything else.
Get a Mac, but be sure that your specialist software comes with Mac OS X versions. You can install Windows XP SP2 on an Intel Mac along side Mac OS X though so it's all good.

So much other software is not compatible... It will be in time... Vista was brought out a year too early to meet the marketing peoples requirements.... The public are being used to troubleshoot all the problems... Mid 2008 is the time to think of changing to Vista.... at the moment XP is much the better...

i posted a question a few days ago and got people to post stuff that doesnt work on vista. some guy came back to me and said i know nothing about computers, and that microsoft vista was designed for professionals.
well.....
Vista is obviously not designed for IT professionals other than tech support because it is so inefficient.
They should have spent more time on functionallity issues rather than making it look pretty.
they could have spent a little bit of time making a compatibility area that is actually XP without all that other stuff, so you can run programs.
as to knowing nothing about computers- actually, i do.

I totally agree with you, urgh it's so annoying when programmes you need for uni don't work, I'm in 3rd year and thought having a brand new laptop with the most up to date OS would help, but it keeps crashing and I've lost alot of essays. Next time it truely is a Mac for me too!
Oh and its so cr*p because they rushed it out, it's not that much difference to XP, they just thought 'we havent come out with a new OS in a while, better just make XP look a bit different to con people out of their money'.

Heard we will all be getting Vista, wouldn't reccomend a mac though, problems with them too. They are ok for schools, but for Uni work wouldn't risk it, know someone who has one for teachers training, and its a real hassle.
