A kitten would be good for a 12 year old as they take care of themselves as long as the litter is changed and they have fresh clean food and water. If she is to take care of the kitten, someone needs to check at least 3 times a day that she is doing the job.

I would kind of say that no pet would be good for her at this point. It is good that she is thinking about it though. If she thinks more about her likes and dislikes, and as she gets a bit older, she may have more of a connection to a certain type of pet. Right now, she might just be looking for a pet as a type of "novelty". However, if she is determined to get a pet, she should make a list of possible pets, do a bit of research and list the pros and cons (both actual and personal) for particular pets.

Sorry that this doesn't really answer your question, but this is the first answer that popped into my mind. I have owned cats, a ferret, fish, hamsters, mice, snakes, etc. over the period of my life, and know that they all involve a lot of work to take care of properly, even if it is all different in levels of care.

I have always wanted to have a dog, but know with my schedule I would not (right now at least) be able to give it the type of life it deserves. So...to at least enjoy dogs, I can play with them at frends' homes, etc... I hang out with friends, but can also get my dog "fix" while I am there.

How about a kitten, they are cute and lovely pets, but are a bit more independent than dogs ie you could go out for the day and leave a cat at home and depending on the area you live it could go out into the garden through a cat flap while your out. They also don't involve cleaning a cage or anything like hamsters or rabbits do and I feel they are better pets as they interact a bit more ie they aren't just stuck in a cage until your sister wants to play with them.
Hope that helps.

i personally love dogs, i use to have several of them then their time would come. right now i am an owner of 3 parakeets, 2 hamsters, bearded dragon, and a dog! i love them all. take your sister tot eh pet shop and let her eye browse. then if she finds something she likes then research it and get some info on it. if your sister is really picky and cant find anything she likes then she might not be ready to have a pet. you have to be intrigued about the pet to be able to take care of it properly. so dont rush into anything, so like i said just take her pet browsing and see what happens! good luck!

I think it could be cat cause dogs need more atention and care and she's only 12.If you find her the right kind of cat (I suggest fostering some young one from the street) she'll be able to spend time with her/him while at home and doing everything she usually does.Advantages of cats are that there's no need of taking them to walk few times a day, training to come when you call them, cleaning them and after them and stuff

a rabbiat is always a fun pet! Or a little dog! I have a beagle, trust me you never will be bored with that dog! Dogs are fun because they listen to you! Go to a pet store and let her look at some of the animals there! Let her pick her favorite! Good luck!

Okay hamsters don't eat each other if they are in two different cages. If she can't take care of that, tell your mom to get her a plant and see if she can take care of that, then move to bigger things like fish.

my sister was turning13 when she got her dog so you could get her a dog but it would be best to get a small one and non shedding its less mess. but a dog is a big responsibility. I suggest a rabbit or maybe a hedgehog those are so cute! Or a mouse something small like that. But a hermit crab doesn't live long ours only lived for a couple days and we took good care of it.

Rabbit, Rat, Chinchilla, Hedgehog, Kitten, Ferret, Guinea Pig, Parakeet. I really would let her pick out her own pet since you say she is picky.

Stay away from reptiles. (snakes, turtles, lizards, etc) No Tarantulas, either. They require extensive knowledge and care (housing, light and temperature) and die easily if the conditions are not precise.

Well I have 2 turtles. They're not very hard to take care of, and you can take them out of the tank and stuff, too.

If you want small pets, that is.

You could get a kitten, because they're calm and nice, but that requires a little bit of caring for.

A small bird like a parakeet is also a great pet to have, but also requires caring for.
