i have symptoms about 2 times a week- im not wanting to take medication for it right now, so i try to prevent occurrences as much as possible. Avoid caffeine, nicotine or any other stimulant. When you have to be on your feet for extended periods of time, be sure youve invested in some good shoes. If anything it just hurts more when you have sore and restless legs. My boyfriend also messages my legs when they are bad.. it helps some, and it distracts me from the pain.

I actually will get symptoms in my arms and hands too- a squesshy stress ball is my favorite relief until the spell passes

I have heard that a brisk walk before bedtime helps but doesn't completely stop it. My wife has it and we have talked about the medications and the other possible issues.
The one thing that did seem to help was the use of quinine water. This is a presciption although I was told that you can buy it in lower strentghs over the counter. This was used for treating shin splints, a painful problem that runners would get.
You might ask the pharmacist if is possible to still get it over the counter, it is poison in large doses, but has been and effective treatment for many of the last 60 years.
Good Luck!

My mother had this badly. She never went to the doctor about it or anything else either. I did read an article about this syndrome recently, but I can't remember where. I have a tiny feeling it was on this site. Anyway, my mother ate huge amounts of butter and always had a cup of tea in her hand, so maybe these two things had something to do with it. If I remember where I read about it and can track it down, I will post again here in the comments section. I hope you find a cure. Good luck.

Really there is nothing because it is a neurological problem. You can keep shaking your leg but once you settle down that feeling comes back again. Someone told me quinine water may work. The problem is not in the leg but the nerves in the brain. the drugs change the signal to the leg.

Cut your leg off - just kidding.
Use a rubbing ointment for pain and wrap your leg in a thermal guaze. Prop them up on a few pillows to alleviate the pain. Try to limit activities ( walking, exercising, running, jumping, etc) close to bedtime.
Hope this is helpful.

Go jogging before bed, or run in place for about 15 min, or you could even run on a treadmill. It wears you and your legs out.
