Christians believe all sorts of things. It shouldn't bother you unless you also believe in it too.

The question asks why Christians believe this, not for a referendum on Christianity by comparing it with one's personal philospophy. Christians base their beliefs on the Bible, so that's where you should go for the answer.
For those who have have sinned, God's Word says YES.
The only way that sinners can avoid going to Hell is through faith in Jesus. John 14:6. Jesus spoke of Hell often, Matthew 5:22, 5:29-30, 10:28, 18:9, 23:15, 23:33, 25:31-46; Luke 12:5 (there are others), and will preside on Judgment Day. Revelation 20:11-15. Unbelievers will be sent to Hell. See, e.g., Revelation 20:11-15, 21:6-8, 27. That is where Satan and his angels are going. 2 Peter 2:4; Revelation 20:7-10. Why join them?
There will be many who will advise you to the contrary, but they are in error. Luke 12:13-21; 2 Peter 2:3; Jude 1:18. Consider the evidence, it is all around you and within you. Romans 1:18-20.
Unrepentant souls exist forever. Luke 16:19-31. Jesus told the story of the rich man and Lazarus, in which the rich man continued to suffer, despite having died. The torment is perpetual, eternal, for all of the souls who are condemned to Hell. Revelation 20:10-15, 21:6-8; Matthew 25:41 (unbelievers go into the eternal fire with the devil and his angels); Matthew 25:46 (eternal punishment).
Just as there is eternal life for believers, unbelieving souls face eternal death. 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9 (unbelievers punished with everlasting destruction). In other places, Jesus referred to outer darkness and a fiery furnace where "there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." Matthew 8:12, 13:42, 13:50, 22:13; 24:51, 25:30; Luke 13:28. Also take a look at Mark 9:43-49 and Revelation 14:9-11. Nothing impure, shameful or deceitful will enter Heaven. Revelation 21:27.
There will come a time when everyone will acknowledge Jesus for who he is, but by then it will be too late. Romans 14:11; Philippians 2:10-12; Revelation 20:11-15.
Thank you for reading this. God does not want anyone to perish and is patient, 2 Peter 3:9, but each of us must choose.

You don't understand that Hell is a hole in the ground or Hades, in the days Jesus walked the earth this was their garbage dump, and it was always burning. Jesus spoke so the people of the time would understand, you go back to that time and start speaking the languages used today and the people will say you are an evil spirit come to hurt someone because you would be not of what was then considered the norm.
The fact that people still try to find fault in and point accusing fingers at all that was given to us through translation of the works of the prophets not God but blame it on God and Jesus just proves what Jesus said, this too was foretold, they couldn't leave everything out, and God in His wisdom Has released enough information for those who earnestly seek the truth can find it in the words written millenias ago, we can still find comfort.
Man's misunderstanding and word for word quotes which are probably not translated to the full meaning of the passage is just another way for Jesus' followers to recognize them as needing prayer and more understanding so we will not argue with them.
Stop calling christianity a religion, Catholic, Protestants, United, Jehovah Witnesses these are relegions, christianity is a way of life, you live it every day, you try (not always succeeding either) to live as closely to Jesus as your corporal body will allow you, and when you sway and recognize it you ask for forgiveness and apologize if your action has hurt anyone.
The christian that stated the above is still just a human being therefore does not know everything and obviously has a narrow minded view of the whole of christianity, for Jesus did not preach among the believers but the non believers that wanted to know more about Jesus' way, the Truth.
Fear is a man's tool, God doesn't need to invoke fear in us, because he gave us the choice to believe in His Son's sacrifice for all humanity or not. This does not mean that God hates the unbelievers, this is a religious tactic to keep the people in church so they can fill the coffers because be realistic priests don't work or bring in any income except what is given in church on Sundays, which is the first day of the week by the way not the Sabbath which is the Saturday.
Please ask for enlightenment and the revelation of the truth and the meaning of the written word will not scare you for it was not meant to scare anyone and if anyone tries this tactic on you you can tell them be gone evil one I know my God and He would not do as you speak. That simple. Peace

It's not the religion that threatens you with eternity in hell. It's
GOD Himself. Everything you want to learn about eternity is explained in the Bible. My suggestion to you and other non-believers is instead of asking questions and reading the answers, is to pick up a Bible and read it. It's not only a history book, but also tells YOUR future. The choice is yours... Repent of your sins and live a life in heaven or keep on sinning and spend eternity in hell. Most people don't think of it, but just think of how long a person lives on earth, if he/she lives a normal life. Then think of eternity... the 60, 70 years you may live is just a bleep in time... your choice...

Make no mistake: the Christian religion also threatens Christians with these same things. All of humanity is sinful, and all are *deserving* of hell.
After reading scripture myself, I am not convinced that simply failing to believe during one's lifetime is sufficient for eternal punishment (counterexample: 1Pe 3:18-20). However, I am glad that I am a believer, in the light of verses like Mar 16:16 and Luk 12:46-47. Still, the argument *can* be made that these verses refer to apostates (those with full knowledge but who still refuse to believe, such as the non-believing witnesses of Jesus' miracles), not to all unbelievers in general.
You shouldn't necessarily accept the doctrine of 1 Christian, or even 100, to be that held by Christians in general unless they can support it incontrovertibly with scripture.

It makes me laugh so hard every time I hear someone say I'll burn in hell for this or that. I've taken up saying, oh yeah well you'll burn in purgatory for not believing in Islam. I'll tell you what I'll make a deal with christians out there who say or believe I will go to hell for not believing. When I die and if I end up in hell with the devil I owe you a coke.

It goes back to the earliest days when the church was hugely powerful and it wanted to keep its congregation gripped in fear. It is similar in other religions.
As christians make up 33.03% (of which Roman Catholics 17.33%, Protestants 5.8%, Orthodox 3.42%, Anglicans 1.23%),
what happens to the others: Muslims 20.12%, Hindus 13.34%, Buddhists 5.89%, Sikhs 0.39%, Jews 0.23%, other religions 12.61%, non-religious 12.03%, atheists 2.36% (2004 est.)
Hell must be a big place, at least it is warm.

2 things:
1. No *man* can send a person to hell. It's his own choice whether to go there or not.
2. Only a loving God would give you the chance *every single day* to make the decision to spend eternity in paradise instead of hell regardless of the decisions you made yesterday, last year, or ever before.

the bible is very unclear in who will be saved. All who believe but it says so what if you do devils do and they are not saved.Whoever calls on the name of the Lord then it says not every one that calls on the name of the Lord. it says all who believe then it says you must believe and be baptize. it says that we are saved by grace or was it faith or was it works or was it a combination. I just decided to believe that all will be saved because that is God's will and Jesus came to do His will. I do not and can not believe if there is a God that anyone will be tormented in a lake of fire for ever. And I do not see where people say that Satan gets to add to the torture of people in Hell. If he did, this would not be an eternal Hell for him but an eternal Paradise.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm! According to some groups everybody is going to Hell. Hell is used so much and for so many things it no longer has value or fear to some, Besides some peoples lives are so harsh hell seems pale in comparison. To others they know when death strikes you are gone for good.

Why do atheists like Richard Dawkins call God a delusion, and hence imply that every theist is deluded. So we say you will go to an imaginary hell, but you say we are truly deluded. So who is more vicious?
