What is the industry standard for writing web content? By the word, page, hour...What is a typical amount?

I'm in negotiation with a company for writing health information and want to know what is typical before I go in.

Some people will charge by the word, while others will quote a cost based on a certain number of words. I've heard of both so I'm not sure what to say. Can you ask this company and see how they prefer to compensate their writers - by the word or by the article?
