The vast majority of light aircraft don't have air conditioning !.

In my Piper Cub I open the window if it's to warm. If it's to cold I wear an ex WWII Irvin jacket. No heating system either.

More expensive aircraft may have air conditioning similar to that found in up market cars. Works on the same principles.

Some like on the 172 use regular freon type systems like a car uses...with an actual compressor under the cowling...the Learjet 25 that I used to fly has freon air all self contained in the "hell hole" in the tailcone...the hawker I fly now has what they call an air cycle machine...it uses bleed air from the APU or engines and conditions it to however the temp control is set..
There are some other types..but Im not to familiar with them...

Most light aircraft have no air conditioning as stated, however, until you get into the turbines, they use refrigerant just like your car.
On the 2 that I have dealt with the Cessna 421 system run off anf electric motor behind the baggage compartment, the 172 compressor run off the engine, just like a car.

Cessna 172

Cooler air, is air taken from the outside, through vent intake system

Warmer air, air goes through vent and is passed over/close to the engine to warm up then inside cabin

not too sure about commerical airlines, but was flying last week and it was f*ckin cold.
