They are titles which the clergy enjoys using. Matthew 10:43 Jesus shows whoever would be greatest or take the lead must become their minister or servant. Jesus gave us the example by washing the feet of his apostles at the time of the last Passover. (John ch. 13) They objected to this, but he showed the attitude we should have. Especially those taking the lead in the congregation. A strong sense of humility mixed with caring for the family of brothers and sisters.
The clergy of Jesus' day had developed a strong sense of entitlement and loved showing off their rank and privilege. In Matthew 6:1-8, when people asked him how to pray, he gave the example of what the scribes and pharisees did as what not to do. Think of the clergy you know. Do they not go for the show?
There was one clergyman I know who insisted on TAKING (and how) any in his congregation to doctor or hospital appointments. A nice thing right? But, along the way he would say, "You please, just pay for the gas." His Cadillac was always on empty. When he arrived at the doctor's office, out came his cell phone and called everybody to let them know why he was where he was.
Ministers are to be servants of the congregation. Some translations for verse 11, use servant or slave instead of minister.

Jesus warned us that “false Christs and false prophets” will come and will attempt to deceive even God’s elect (Matthew 24:23-27; see also 2 Peter 3:3 and Jude 17-18). To best guard yourself against falsehood and false teachers - know the truth. To spot a counterfeit, study the real thing. Any believer who is, “rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15), and who makes a careful study of the Bible, can identify false doctrine.

Yes, I know what you're speaking of.
There are Pharisees all around. They give the rest of us a bad name.
Certain televangelists make us all look like fools.
Please know that many of us are good people.
We hear about the bad ones but not about the thousands and thousands of ministers who are wonderful people.
It is the same with any other group. We hear about the bad teachers, the doctors who are no good, the businessmen who cheat, the lawyers who are dishonest, and the lousy politicians. The really great ones don't mak the news.
It's sad. Scandal gets more media coverage than all the wonderful things that go on in the world.
The evening news is sometimes more violent than any movie ever made.

Yes, those scribes and pharisees were such evil folks. The Saducees were priests who prepared sacrifices and enforced the law. Since the Temple was destroyed there are no more Saducees, but those evil pharisees still exist in the rabbis of today. Your gospels contain such good news for everyone, er... except maybe for those evil Jews.
The Catholic "cult" is the modern day Suducees -- NOT the pharisees. You may be interested to learn something about modern Judaism.

pharisees and hypocrites. hmmmm, sounds alot like some christians I have met over the years. I thought that scribes, were ppl who write for a living, ie, ppl who dictated the bible, for years on end, and pharisees and hypocrite, for me, is a person who does not " walk the walk, or talk the talk".
