We have a stray kitten we've been taking care of for about 2 weeks. She's about 4 or 5 weeks old now...so would it be okay to give her a bath? She's about to start eating dry food too. But, do you think it'd be okay to do that, and then use a flea comb to help get the fleas off? If so, what kind of shampoo, that I can get ay Pets*Mart, Target, or Wal*Mart?

We've already talked to the vet about 2 times so far to give updates, and to help her with her feeding...cause she used to reject the milk.

Pet store flea products do NOT work. You will also not find any that can be used on cats under 12 weeks old, but really it shouldn't even be used on adult cats, many brands, like Hartz, can be very dangerous.

You need to go to a vet to get flea treatment that works and is safe. The only thing that can be used on kittens under 8 weeks of age is Frontline spray - this can actually be used on kittens and pups from 2 days of age. Once the kittens are 8 weeks old, you can move on to any of the veterinary spot-ons. Flea shampoos are pretty pointless, you need something that's actually going to prevent the fleas so your kitten does not get reinfested.

Pet store stuff is cheaper, but please don't waste your money or endanger the kittens.

If it is not necessary then avoid giving a bath. When we had our first kitten she was only 2 months old and our vet had suggested to feed her dry food for couple of months. That would prevent food decay in the mouth.

Avoid buying food from Walmart. Go for prescription food. Kittens need a lot of nutrient and a vet would be able to recommend a prescription food that is best for kittens. We have been feeding both our kitten prescription diet. They are on Medi-cal. This is a good brand.

For flea, try out "Revolution" or "Frontline". Fingers crossed, our kitten have never had flea problem. However, we use Revolution routinely as a preventative measure.

I wouldnt give your young kitten a bath, the shock might kill her. Fleas are a problem in kittens and cats as she is so young I would get the vets advice. Frontline Cat is the best for getting rid of fleas but she is too young you really need the vets advice. Good luck with your kitty.

It's really not safe to use a flea shampoo on a kitten that young. Most labels will say not to use on kittens under 6 weeks.. I use dawn dish soap on all my pets young and old. It is the best flea killer I have found yet, and it's not harmful to them.

Ok first off, if you haven't taken her to the vet yet, you need to, for vaccinations and such. Then you need to ask your vet when it would be ok to give her a bath and such. At this age it may be to young and cause too much trama. Ask the vet and see, i didn't bathe my cat till he was 8 weeks old. Good Luck!
