Can't Open Windows Live Messenger?

When I click the shortcut, it doesn't open. I have a hotmail account and have used messenger for years without this type of a problem.

I see it running in the proccesses as msnmsgr.exe but when I end it and start again it still doesn't open. Please don't give me a link for a help forum I want the exact answer to fix this.

I hate this newer program. I tried to not update it because I knew it would be worse and it is. However, it forced me to update it.

The messenger that comes with windows xp doesn't work any more, download Windows Live Messenger 8.1.
