For those of you who find this offensive, please don't answer, just move along, and don't ruin it for everyone else that may want to know the answer to this question as well. In other words, if you don't like it, imagine you never saw it and find another question to answer. But anyone with the ability to explain this, please feel free to do so.

Why didn't God tell Abraham, Moses, David, or Jesus about original sin? Jews have always believed that everyone is born with a clean slate, why does christianity teach differently? Did God think that information wasn't important until Jesus came along?

I understand why Jews don't believe in original sin, I just don't understand why it is that Christians do. If you have to, take your time and ask your pastor this Sunday, I'll leave the question open until at least Monday night.

Jews do not believe in the doctrine of original sin. This is a Christian belief based on Paul's statement, "Therefore just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned" (Romans 5:12). The doctrine was fully developed by the church father, Augustine of Hippo (354-430).

According to this doctrine, hereditary sinfulness is inescapably transmitted to human beings by their parents, starting with Adam and Eve. It is alleged that only acceptance of Jesus as savior from sin can redeem a person from sin. All those who do not accept Jesus as their savior from sin are condemned to eternal suffering in hell.

Whether man is a sinner by nature or not is immaterial. Judaism teaches the biblical way to repentance and reconciliation with God. Sincere repentance in which the sinner pledges to rectify his sinful ways and lead a righteous life is one means that is open at all times to all of humanity (Jonah 3:5-10, Daniel 4:27). God counsels Cain, "Why are you annoyed, and why has your countenance fallen? If you do good [that is, change your ways], will it not be lifted up [that is, you will be forgiven]. But if you do not do good, sin rests at the door; and it desires you, but you may rule over it" (Genesis 4:6-7). God informs Cain that repentance and subsequent forgiveness are always open to him. The remedy for sin is clear. Biblically, God's loving-kindness depends on right conduct and extends to all humanity.

According to the Christian doctrine of original sin, until Jesus, atonement for sins could only be received through a blood atonement offering at the altar of the Jerusalem Temple. Those (Jews and all Gentiles) who could not avail themselves of the atonement granted at the Jerusalem Temple's altar died by this sin, consigned to eternal punishment with no means of achieving atonement and heavenly blessings. Following Jesus' death, it is claimed, neither Jew nor Gentile could receive forgiveness of their sins without belief in him as savior from sin. Indeed, if what Christianity says is true billions of people since then have also suffered the same fate, unaware of Jesus as their "savior" or that there was even a need to be "saved." According to this rationalization, God created humankind with free will and the ability to sin then demanded superlative perfection from this imperfect being that He created. Then God took on the guise of humanity in the form of Jesus in order to rescue His imperfect creation. But, in the process consigned billions of lost souls before and after the advent of Jesus to eternal punishment for not knowing of Jesus and accepting the "grace" he allegedly provided. Billions of people, Christian doctrine teaches, have gone to eternal damnation for not accepting what they did not know about!

Some Christian commentators explain, "he [Jesus] went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison" (1 Peter 3:19) as meaning that Jesus, between his death and supposed resurrection, descended into Hell and offered to those who lived before Noah (verse 20) a second chance for salvation. But, this is a doctrine that is without even New Testament support. The eternal damnation of billions of men, women, and children who whether living before or after Jesus never heard of the claim that there is no forgiveness of sin outside of belief in Jesus is the summation of the Christian doctrines of original sin. Is this the Christian understanding of a just and righteous God who is also compassionate?

The answer lies with circumcision and the law that sanctified the Jews, although God had the prerogative of accepting or denying that circumcision. This carried over to Catholicism's baptism which has a parallel to circumcision, erasing original sin and providing the same sanctification that circumcision did. Reformed/Presbyterian belief also parallels circumcision, but also keeps original sin and God's prerogative of accepting or denying that baptism so that those who are denied that sanctification, are left in their sins. This explains God's hating of Esau from the womb as well as the thief on the cross and likely his dying without baptism or circumcision.

Other Protestants deny original sin but also deny baptism as a replacement for circumcision, believing that the new covenant allows an age of reason, with sanctification prior to that age. This allows babies to go to heaven when they die, but inserts a free will choice for or against God after that point. And this of course has its own parallel to the Jewish belief in the lack of original sin, and a "clean slate" for Man.

we don't have to ask a pastor b/c a pastor is not God; God's plan has worked without the input of man; Earth, the Universe was here before man and works fine without the daily input of man which has no hand in the workings of everything seen and unseen including our body; no man , nor religion knows God's plan; even God's chosen people the Jews don't have the answers , God discloses what he needs to in his time not ours; the difference between believing or not believing is that we don't question God; he is on a different playing field ; to question God tells him that you think you are at or above his level; when man creates the stars moons and planets , I will listen until then; I know my place, a creation plain pure and simple. You can't know God or feel his presence when you are always trying to disprove , a harden heart has little room for anything else but arrogance.

I usually do not answer questions from atheists because most of the time it is usually just a arguement waiting to happen. However I felt something different in my spirit when I read your question so I did not click it back off.

I don't know anything about you or why you believe the way you do.

The Catholic Church are the one who have come up with this doctrine. They are the false prophet spoken of in the book of Revelation.
http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=73&chapter=16&verse=13&version=9&context=verse
(In case you might want to see what it says. I will not post it on the screen. I don't want to appear to cram the Bible in your face.)

When we are born we are born into a world of sin. We have not sinned but in time we will sin. The sacrifice of Jesus was for our sins we must accept him in order to be saved.

God knows our hearts as adults and as children, he is filled with love and compassion and great mercy for each and every one of us. He knows what our minds are capable of doing. God judges our heart. When we are able or old enough to understand the sacrifice Jesus made we need to accept him in order to be saved.

The doctrine of original sin is a lie of the devil brought forth by the catholic chirch.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Original_sin
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augustine_of_Hippo
Remember this church is the false prophet. It has decieved millions and has also caused millions to turn away from the faith that was once given to the first true saints of God.

For these lies she (catholics) has brought forth God said he will cast that church into great tribulation.

I don't know if you know the depts of the Catholic Church but it has been very evil since it's beginning.

The true people of God (saints) do not follow the catholic doctrines or teachings. Jesus Christ is our salvation not a priest not the pope not some dead "saint". They are lies straight from Satan himself.

What I have said may offend some, but the truth hurts.

I don't know where to send you (at this time) on the internet if you are interested of learning the deceptions of the catholic church. But if you do learn these you can see how it has decieved many and how they are not the true people of God.

All are born with a clean slate - which is why a child will go to heaven upon death.
Adam's sin, and the resultant punishment of spiritual and eventually physical death, was a pattern-connection that was established and set the legal precedent for death to be inflicted as the penalty for all sins.

'Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned-- '

I read your answers so far. Everyday I find reasons to dislike Christianity and the ignorance of Christians even more.

Original sin? Give me a break!

If souls are created with every new birth than how could a perfect deity place "sin" on that soul for the supposed "sins" of the original goat herder.

What was the goat herders sin? KNOWLEDGE!

OR, is original sin proof of reincarnation?

The original sin was with Adam and eve, that put all of us under the debt for that sin. In those days, if one sins, it was accounted for every one. The priest would do a sin offering, and place there sins on a scape goat. God so loved the world, that He send His only begotten son, to be our scape goat, and die, paying the price for that original sin, so we could be saved alive, God has since, put it in every ones heart, to know when they sin, now every one is responsible
for their own sins, they have to repent them selves, and they can now go to God through Jesus our high priest, at the right hand of God His Father, He is their to intercede for us.

God gave Israel and Judah a new covenant , that took away the original sin. every one then was responable for their own sins.
Jeremiah 31:29-31;33,34 >In those days, they shall say no more, The Fathers have eaten a sour grape, and the children's teeth are set on edge.
But every one shall die for his own iniquity; every man that eat the sour grape; his teeth be set on edge.
Behold, the days vcome says the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house oof Israel; after those days, says the Lord, I will put My law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall ne My people
And they shall teach no more every man his nrighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD; for they shall all know Me from the least of them to the greastest of them, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
At this point every one had to come to the priest and get their own sin offering for their sins.
God later sent Jesus to change the sin burned offering for sin,
Jesus became our scape goat and he died, paying our debt for sin thus far, now we are no longer under that debt, he gave us a clean slate, and a new way to go to God in his name, for for giveness.

Frankly I had never heard that Jews didn't believe in "original sin" although I guess it makes sense. But since the Christian world has changed so many teachings it doesn't surprise me really.

you have raised a very interesting point and one that has caused division amongst Christians for many years.
The original sin theory comes form the Pauline doctrine and is one that Jesus never mentioned.
That doesn't change the fact that all the problems that Abraham, Moses and David faced were caused by the original sin of disobedience from Adam and Eve.
It also doesn't change the necessity of Christs death for the final redemption of sin.
