Is there any way of telling if a stray dog is pregnant, other than a vet visit?

You really need to have the dog Vet checked. Two reasons:
1. It is a stray
2. If it is pregnant the vet can tell you how the dog is going to handle the delivery.

We lost a beautiful and rare silver lab during the birth process once. We were working with a vet because we knew it was her first pregnancy. She died in my arms on the way to the Vet in the middle of the night. I had the Vet on the phone during her labor and things seemed to be progressing nicely but suddenly everything went south. The vet told us to get her to the clinic but she passed on the way there.

There is such thing as a false pregnancy, and the signs can be the same as a real pregnancy, so going by swollen nipples, big belly, change in behavior (with a stray that would seem hard)....all these CAN be signs of pregnancy, or not.

You need to put more effort into finding this dogs owners. You want to make a claim that its yours and not even willing to vet the dog to find out what kind of condition its in.

a dog is pregnant for 60 days so if you can see swollen **** or if she looks slightly overweight could be a sign

well when my dog was preg. she acted more friendly than normal and there were some lumps in her belly so i would just see how it acts and if it will let you rube its bell and feel for bumps .

if you can go up to her..touch her stomache you may be able to make out pups if shes in a late stage of pregnancy
