Because it is a counterproductive coping mechanism, rather than confronting your issues directly and finding healthy ways of alleviating mental pain. By cutting you physically disassociate and mentally disconnect with the mental pain that comes with your situation rather than tackling it head on. And the scars are bad and you are setting yourself up for infection among other things.

The idea is not so bad, because people do it help themselves. But it ends up turning into an addiction. It's like taking speed to get all your homework done because you're so stressed out. Sure it helps at the moment, but really you're adding one more stress to your list;; being a drug addict. It helps at the moment, but not in the long-term. Plus, it is hurting yourself, and its just like if you got a really bad cut that that by accident; you need to go to the hospital. But if you did it yourself you're not going to go. You risk infection. Some end up commiting suicide by accident (contridicting, I know), because they simply cut too deep. Its all around a bad idea, but its nothing to be mocked the way people now mock it. It's serious.

Mainly because people who are doing the cutting are taking out their anger on themselves, and doing it in a harmful way. It is bad because there are other ways to deal than harming yourself.

where on God's little green green earth would the idea of cutting yourself open be a good thing? it's an issue of control. people who cut do so in an effort to gain relief by having control over one simple act. most of my patients that cut have been abused in one form or another. some who cut now use to do drugs heavily or drink. in a sense it is a way of self-medicating but with a blade. it can take a lot of therapy to get somebody past the urge to cut. and anything that takes yrs of therapy can't possibly be good.

The cuts could lead to permanent scars.

Risk of infection; staph, strep, HIV, hepatitis, etc.

You could "accidentally" cut a major blood vessel and bleed to death.
