This is in reference to the US Civil War. If there were a peaceful break, death and destruction would have been avoided on both sides. What were the real reasons for the North to go to war to stop the split?

The reasons being that one side thought they knew better than the other side. The truth is, neither side could exist without the other. The south at that time had 90 percent of the agriculture for the country, while the north had 90 percent of the industrial base. This would be what "A house divided against itself, cannot stand," means. While I personally agree with stronger states rights and less federal government.

For the other posters on here:

Apparently people think that the Civil War was fought over slavery. It's simply not true. The Confederacy wanted to be ruled by their individual states, not by Washington politics. In fact thats exactly what 'CONFEDERACY' means. Lincoln was even qouted as saying he had no intention on freeing the slaves which is why, when he issued the Emmancipation Proclamtion (3 years into the war mind you), it was only for the southern states. It did not include freeing slaves in the middle and northern states (yes their were slaves in the north). Open a book People.

Economics...Lincoln was facing a recession and after the south had seceded from the union Lincoln had lost the largest tax base he had. The South had seceded because they were being heavily taxed and had little return from paying those taxes.

Lincoln was pro-slavery until to win political office it was unpopular so he changed sides of that debate to become president. After starting and fighting the "War of Northern Aggression" for several years he had to have an excuse for it so he "freed the slaves". The irony of this is he was writing legislation for another country! Slavery was already going out because of better farming methods and the cotton gin and it didn't require the huge amounts of labor to operate the farms.

Texas is the only "state" that negotiated with the US government before re-entering the union. One of which was the right to withdraw at any time the union did not fulfill the agreements. To this day the union has not fulfilled a single one of those agreements! This is one of the reasons there is a movement in Texas to withdraw from the union today, but it may never happen.

Um - slavery. I think alot of people dont look past the aspect that if slavery were allowed this would not just affect African Americans, next it would have been all races depending on their "class" in society. Also if you look at the differences between the north and the south you will find more people in the north stand up for their worker rights and form unions. In the south you find alot of people who will work for lesser wages and not stand up for themselves and start unions - keeping the bigger companies in business and put up with what ever the companies throw at them. As a whole the US has a place in these United States to develope and offer big business cheap labor - although this may not last long anyway because all good jobs are going south and overseas anyway.

The real reason? How about the preservation of the union? The federal government had a myriad of reasons from political to economic and constitutional to keep the union intact.
The "north" did not go to war. The United States Government went to war against rebels bent on destroying the country.

Plus Bush wanted Halliburton to make more money. Figured I'd beat the loony left to it and enter something about Bush before they could for once! LOL

To preserve the Union. To prevent a slave holding nation to form on our southern boarder. To prevent a series of future wars from happening.

I hope your still holding those Confederate Dollars. Just kidding.....actually there is and people are gonna bust my chops some validity to this question. Politics right now is getting scary..the answer to your question is the same Politics. The southern states DID NOT AGREE with the emancipation proclamation and revolted they had a lot of money to lose cheap labor..they had FREE labor and did not want this to cut their cost of living. A division among politicians right now is causing a big division in the USA right
now ....Immigration. You will see politicians and people argue and debate this issue that as we speak is dividing our country.

Manifest Destiny... One nation, one country, one land... of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish....

The reasons can easily be found in Lincoln's address he gave at Gettysburg.
