Actually, a "chocolate craving" bacteria was discovered in the stomach of chocolate-lovers, so it's actually the bacteria that craves chocolate - not you!
But, suppose a religion-craving bacteria were discovered, so it's the bacteria that thrives on the belief in a superior power, not you. Or suppose a religion-gene were discovered that makes some people religious and others atheists.
I think such a discovery would turn all religion on its head. In the case of a religion-bacteria, it would allow scientists to correctly reclassify religion as a disease. And in the case of a religion-gene, it would allow atheists to assert that belief in religion is beyond an individual's control ... and therefore the choice to believe in God was NOT due to free will.

It has been recently discovered that a large number of young girls have a microorganism in their bodies which can cause cancer later in life, and it is medically suggested that all girls take the series of three injections to kill it.
The existence of the bacteria might not be classified as a "disease" but it is certainly something that is prevelant and needs to be erradicated in the body - like religion.

How exciting! This same bacteria might also be the cause for the craving for religion and all its intricacies that atheists seem to suffer from. They might actually be able to live their lives free of this obsession that must consume so much of their time and thought.

still searching for the holy grail of atheism ? classifying religion as a disease ? keep searching, but that ain't it.
Since 95% of people are believers of some sort and 5% are not, it is illogical for you to claim 5% are healthy and 95% are diseased. BTW about 5% of population get the flu, next thing you will be claiming is that the 5% that get infected are healthy and the 95% who do not are diseased.
Nice try, but no cigar.

probably its a disease that makes YOU reject the existence of god
When the hypocrites and those in whose hearts was a disease (of disbelief) said: "These people (Muslims) are deceived by their religion." But whoever puts his trust in Allah, then surely, Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise.
( سÙرة اÙØ£ÙÙا٠, Al-Anfal, Chapter #8, Verse #49)
But as for those in whose hearts is a disease (of doubt, disbelief and hypocrisy), it will add suspicion and doubt to their suspicion, disbelief and doubt, and they die while they are disbelievers.
( سÙرة اÙتÙبة , At-Taubah, Chapter #9, Verse #125)

Lay off the science-fiction. These kinds of embarrassing speculations serve only to illustrate the desperation and stupidity of people who obviously have nothing better to "think" about.

I dunno about the religion bacteria...can you have bacteria in your brain?
the gene thing is more likely, they have already discovered that people with a certain gene are more likely to have addictive tendencies, so I can easily imagine that some people have a "religious gene" (it may go hand in hand with a lower iq :D) because I view people who need religion as having a sort of dependency...

It is a bacterium in the singular. "Bacteria" is the plural.
