My 2 yo and her 5 yo and 9 yo are going to go outside to play while we study on the patio. If the rain comes back, I afraid the 9yo will be bored. I know he plays football, but I'm not sure what types of things he likes beyond that. I have the movies Cars and Priates of the Caribbean. I'm going to the store in a few minutes. I'm going to get some extra crayons and coloring books for my son and the 5 yo. What do you suggest for the older boy?

I have an old Nintendo Gamecube, but the only game I have is Starfox adventures.

I don't feel comfortable asking his mother to bring something for him. She's a single mom and for all I know, they don't have ANY toys.
They do have a dog, so I know they like dogs.

He can't use the computer. We will be studying and can not monitor him. I need ideas on things he can do that will keep him occupied, happy and safe.

If the gamecube still works, go to a video store and rent a game for him. My 9 yr old is into pokemon games and the like.

It's not inappropriate to ask his mom to bring something for him, just phrase it properly, "Well I have a couple of movies for the kids to watch, and coloring books, and they are free to bring something else if they want to. I don't really know what 9 year old boys like to do." It's highly unlikely that the child has NO toys. Besides, your study date isn't likely to last for more than a couple of hours. I'm sure a movie would occupy them. Just make sure they have some snacks. Also, you may (with his mother's permission) employ him as a special helper to help look after the little ones while you two work, and give him a couple dollars for doing it. That will make him feel important, and keep all three of them out of trouble.

The computer would keep him occupied probably. It's just according to their personality. My oldest son loves books, so he would just read. My second son would like playing games...either gameboy or real games. But computers usually are enjoyable by kids of all ages. Just make sure to monitor what sites he is going on and you'll be good.

They like computer games. There's all kinds of websites for kids games that he'll like. I have a 9yr. old girl, so I don't know what kind of boys games they have, but you won't have any problems finding them.
